Mrs Eva Martin aged 87 died at 9 30 last night at her daughter Roxie Brown's home in Walnut Hill. She was a former Belle Rive resident. Services will be held at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren on Saturday.
The Illinois Senate approved raises for public school teachers and county judges sending bills to the House. It also backed University of Illinois operating expenses 103,457,000 and 17,975,000 for construction for the two year period starting July 1. A tax increase on distilled liquor was approved to fund alcoholism prevention and care programs. Additional measures rename Eastern Illinois State College to Eastern Illinois University and Western Illinois State College to Western Illinois University. An appropriation of 27,700 to the Health Department funds tracing and registration of radiation installations, and 15,000 to support a legislative commission studying issues facing citizens aged 45 to 65 were also approved.
Flood from a cloudburst hit Spokane on Wednesday night forcing evacuations of hundreds of residents. Water and silt flooded the Peaceful Valley district as cars were trapped up to their fenders in water and mud.

Stan Koziara arrived from Lansing Michigan today. Sam Beatty flew from Mattoon to Mt Vernon and back this morning. Don McLean traveled from Calgary Canada to Mt Vernon today.
Mr and Mrs Joe Wilson of 901 Mar are the parents of a daughter born yesterday at 3 45 PM in Jefferson Memorial Hospital. The baby weighs eight pounds eleven and a half ounces and has been named Edna E.

Armed Forces Day will be celebrated at Scott Air Force Base on Saturday May 18 with an all day Open House inviting the public. The 50th anniversary of the Air Force is noted as part of the events including simulated aircraft crash rescue seat ejection demonstrations helicopter flying displays and various aircraft and equipment on view.
A Springfield Illinois House subcommittee urged amending a proposal for annual sessions to win support. The panel noted little enthusiasm for January start in odd years for normal business and February budget sessions in even years. They discussed options: limit odd year session to four months with veto review, two month even year budget window, longer terms from two to four for the House and six for the Senate, staggering House elections, and lifting a $50 expense cap. Governor Stratton reportedly had no objection to longer terms but opposed combining arrival sessions with the longer term proposal.
Clarence Barnes, 52, a trucker, said he fell asleep in the rear seat of his car on a 45 foot embankment above the Mississippi River. The vehicle went over late Wednesday. Barnes woke in a hospital with head injuries and bruises. Witnesses said two others were in the car, but Barnes claimed he was alone. Coast Guard recovered the car and halted search.

A chemical explosion at Brookhaven National Laboratory injured four people, with one seriously burned. Dr. Leland Haworth, director, said no nuclear radiation was involved. The blast hit the hot laboratory next to the reactor area. 35 workers were inside, six others treated for acid vapors. Richard Johnson, 80, of Baldwin, suffered severe burns and was hospitalized.
A nighttime tornado devastated Silverton with a 200 yard wide path six miles long destroying new homes worth 20 to 25 thousand dollars. Seven people injured and six bodies loaded into a truck for the Douglas Funeral Home as crews cleared debris and motorists warned. Over twenty tornadoes ripped across Texas that day but Silverton faced the worst toll during a week of violent weather.
Dean Acheson challenged President Eisenhower's Korea remarks saying the withdrawal plan from Korea was signed off by then Army chief of staff in 1947. White House countered that Eisenhower referred to a pre 1950 political decision, not military actions, and defended its stance.

The Illinois House Executive Committee backed a freedom of information bill requiring open meetings for bodies funded by public money. It passed 24 to 2 after an amendment adding the word official to the policy statement. Exemptions include certain executive sessions and specific bodies.
The Weather Bureau forecast cooler than normal temperatures across most of the nation for the next 30 days, with above normal rain expected in most areas. It notes a reversal from recent unseasonable warmth, except in the northwest and extreme southeast where warmth may persist.
U S Army says a Japanese court will try Specialist 3C William Girard 21 of Ottawa LaSalle Ill for the fatal shooting of Mrs Naka Sakai 46 who was gathering scrap metal on a military firing range near Tokyo The case marks the first time a Japanese court has jurisdiction over an armed American serviceman in uniform on a firing range under the U S Japan administrative agreement Girard is in U S custody at Camp Wie north of Tokyo and could face charges under Japanese law related to the Soma gahara shooting incident The United States has expressed regret over the death and the incident sparked nationwide resentment
In Crawfordsville Indiana a burlap bag of human bones was unearthed at a farmhouse after a Cincinnati repairman confessed to killing his mother following a quarrel over profits from an Evansville filling station restaurant. A skull was not found. The shallow grave lay beneath a closet measuring 40 by 42 inches.

Hollywood reports Elvis Presley was hospitalized after swallowing a porcelain tooth cap during a film dance number at MGM. The cap passed into the lung and was retrieved at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. A spokesman said Presley would be out of action for a day or two.
Two masked men robbed the Broadview Hotel in East St Louis taking 20000 dollars in gems and 50 dollars from the cash register. desk clerk Ann Robbins and bellboy Bert Avey were threatened with revolvers and forced to the floor while the safes were battered open. A jewelry salesman from Chicago said the gems were insured and left in the satchel. Police note two false burglary alarms were also sent from another section to divert attention.
