A 500 pound Angus heifer was reported stolen to the sheriff's office yesterday afternoon. The animal was taken from the home of Robert Mellott on Route 2 in Mt. Vernon.
Delegates including Cravens Downey and Paul Downey accompanied by Helen Noble will attend the Knights of Columbus convention at the Conrad Hilton May 16 to 18. Activities include masses by Cardinal Cody and Bishop Zuroeste, state officer reports, a social hour, a dinner dance with Wes Harrison and the Ivy Five, and a ladies luncheon led by Irene Hughes. State Deputy Downey concludes his term.
The Register-News corrects a prior report: the vehicle door involved was from the car driven by John L. Cox 21 of S E Crescent, not the truck. Cox’s car door swung open striking a parked truck owned by Illinois Bell in Centralia.

Funeral services for 82 year old Lee O. Davis of Dahlgren will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Gholson Funeral Home with Rev. R L Schlagg officiating. Burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Davis died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was born March 2, 1887, son of Hardin E. and Sarah Clifton Davis. A retired carpenter and mechanic, he was a member of the Dahlgren Methodist Church. Survived by wife Mary Edna Musgrave and one son Lee Roy of Dahlgren. several siblings predeceased him. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at Gholson Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Rev. Henry C. Lovin 81 of Bluford will be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Bluford Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Brookman officiating. Burial in Thurmond cemetery near Ewing. Lying in state after 5:00 p.m. today at Bluford Funeral Home. Died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital. Surviving: Emma Clifford Lovin, four sons Henry Jr Harvey Arthur Bill, two daughters Mildred Rodrick Helen, one brother Floyd, one sister Josie Carlton, 18 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren. He ordained at Hams Grove Baptist Church and was a retired teacher and former Jefferson County deputy clerk. He was born January 28 1880 in Jefferson County. He married Emma Clifford December 7 1907.
Opal Wutzler a Odin resident 48 in poor condition at Good Samaritan hospital and Patsy Sanders 32 of Salem listed in fair condition after a collision of Wutzler car and a semi driven by William Bourland 42 of Memphis on state route 37 six miles north of Mt. Vernon at 6:30 p.m. Injured were transported by Litton Ambulance.
Nixon outlines an eight point peace proposal calling for immediate major troop withdrawals, elections under international supervision, release of prisoners of war, adherence to the Geneva and Laos accords, and a rapid end to U.S. and North Vietnamese fighting within a year. The market extended losses amid Viet Cong rejection of Nixon's troop withdrawal proposal. The Dow Jones industrial average stood at 966.58 at noon, down 2.27, with the broader AP average down 0.6 to 342.8. Industrials fell 1.7, rails rose 0.1, utilities down 1.0. Leasco Data Processing led NYSE activity, down 0.73 to 36.14, as 11 of 20 most active issues fell.
Prices climbed to 23.73 for U S C A No 1 hogs and 23.25 for No 2 with No 3 at 22.75. Sows moved 16.25 to 19.75 and boars at 13.00 to 14.00. After 12 30 p m prices resume according to the next day.
Mt Vernon quoted grain prices include Wheat at 1.22 Soybeans at 2.59 and Corn at 1.22. The figures reflect early trading values from Mt Vernon markets.

St Louis market reports consumer egg grades with size based prices and wholesale ranges. Grades listed include A large 28-32 and A medium 21-26, pullet 15-16, standard 22-24, and broilers 29.00-29.50. Hens listed heavy 13-14 and light over 512 Ibs 10, under 514 Ibs 6.

Two Mt. Vernon drivers faced careless driving charges after separate crashes yesterday. Alfred James Martin 26 of Flint Michigan and Shellie Vence 48 of 1220 South Fifth were involved at 12th and Casey with Shellie charged. damage over 100 dollars. In the second crash Walter E. Bruce 46 of Bluford and Gilbert B. Etheridge 72 of 1006 South 21st collided on Main street. Walter Bruce charged with careless driving. damage over 100 dollars.
Local fire crews responded at 3:33 p.m. yesterday to a car fire in the 100 block of South 10th Street. The blaze damaged the motor and body of the vehicle driven by Gary Clarke of 80472 North 12th Street. The cause remains undetermined.
Carey Lipps reported theft from his locked car in a lot at Fifth and Jordan near Mt Vernon High School. A car stereo and eight tapes were taken while the vehicle was parked yesterday morning. Lipps is from 4 Parker Drive.

Mt Vernon police report recovery of some checks from the Tuesday night robbery at 318 South Ninth Street. Investigators say between $500 and $600 in cash was stolen from the safe, revised from the earlier estimate of 300. Non negotiable bonds made out to John Stables the Lumber Company Manager were also taken.

The 13th annual Mt Vernon Book Fair runs Friday 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the First National Bank lobby. Books of all descriptions will be sold at reduced prices. Sponsored by Mt Vernon City Schools Association, proceeds help schools and students.
The board approved a $11,935 lighting install at Casey Junior High and will upgrade with glass lenses. Six two-drawer file cabinets at $41.33 each, a new duplicating machine, and various maintenance costs at multiple schools were approved. Edmison discussed future uses of nearby property for teaching and lounge space. Programs like the National Teachers Corps and Neighborhood Youth Corps were reviewed with planned student work opportunities.
Rep. Clark MacGregor urged the House Judiciary Committee to probe Fortas Wolfson affair for possible impeachment.
