Ella Cleo Tate 71 of 308 Forest Avenue died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital after a two week stay. Funeral at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Church of God with Rev. Dale Brown. Burial Fall Creek Cemetery Lagger Tennessee. Survived by Lester Tate husband four sons seven daughters 40 grandchildren 22 great grandchildren and multiple siblings. Nelson Rex Bravard of Mt. Vernon was fined 200 dollars for intoxication. Clyde L. Nichols Jr of Route 1 Dahlgren paid 10 dollars for intoxication. Etta M. New Trial For Speck Sought

Defense counsel urged Chicago prosecutors to grant Richard Speck a new trial claiming the jury should decide his mental competence to stand trial. Speck, 25, was convicted in Peoria on April 15 of eight nurse killings in July 1966. Public defender Gerald Getty said he found 54 alleged errors and would argue 24 or 25.

Splash Mud On Marchers

In Louisville Kentucky a largely white clergy group holding a march for open housing faced hostility as mud and steel pellets were thrown during the demonstration. A priest spoke as mud was hurled, but no injuries were reported and police kept watch with no arrests after a two hour event.

Tree House Fire Kills 2 Children

Lenoir North Carolina AP reports a tree house fire killed two boys and critically burned a third after they reportedly lit a bucket fire and slept, falling 20 feet as the structure burned. Roy Ingram aged 13 died at the scene, Alan Darrel Guy 12 died at hospital, Gary Groes 13 remained hospitalized in critical condition.

Rioting at Playland in Frisco Ends With Police Injuries

About 1,000 youths rioted at Playland at the Beach in San Francisco Sunday night injuring 14 police and civilians. Twenty nine youths were arrested as windows were broken and shops looted. Damage estimated near 10000 dollars. Police restored order after two hours with dogs aiding. A second mob gathered in Golden Gate Park panhandle but the disturbance was later described as a happening.

Weekend Fire Alarms in Mt Vernon Two Incidents

Mt Vernon firemen responded to two weekend alarms. One was a false alarm. At 9 10 a m Saturday they were called to 1113 South 24th street for an oil furnace fire that was under control on arrival. At 3 58 p m Sunday responders went to 601 Bell street for a flash alarm from a woman who said she was told to report the alert by an unknown man.

The regular monthly meeting of the Democrat Women's Organization is set for Tuesday May 16 at 7 30 p m in the little courtroom at the courthouse. Pick Up 2 Boys For Auto Theft

State police arrested two 15 year old boys in Jefferson county on Saturday night and booked them for auto theft. Lemuel P Wilcott and Roger C Payne, both of Decatur, were arrested near Dix by Trooper Leroy Lyons and held in the county jail over the weekend before Decatur authorities were to travel tohere.

Vandals damage Jaycee Lake concession stand

Vandals damaged the Jaycee Lake concession building and bath house, erected last year and run by the Mt. Vernon Jaycees. Arnold DeWitt said roofing was ripped off, the flag pole bent, entry attempted, and the structure defaced with spray paint cans.
