Mrs. Stella Dean of 2102 Lamarr received word that her brother Gene Aldrich of Centralia died last night in St Marys Hospital Cen tralia. He was 72 years old. Funeral arrangements are in complete.
J Warren Smith of Denver Colorado former Mt Vernon resident in Gulf Oil land department died suddenly Tuesday in Washington DC after a heart attack. Funeral with Masonic rites set for Carlyle Illinois at 2 pm Saturday. Survived by wife Wilene and one son Bill.
Mt Vernon area Boy Scout Troop 101 will start a safety project by adding reflector tape to bicycles. Girls and boys may attend at The First Methodist Church at 11th and Main on Saturday morning May 17 from 10 to 12. The service is free.
Twenty five women viewed the film Time and Two Women on cancer at Dodds Consolidated School Tuesday evening. A family discussion on cancer signals followed the screening. The meeting was led by Velma Story, township education chair of the American Cancer Society, and Mrs Maxine Culli.
The Tri-State Association of Petroleum Engineers will hold its May meeting at Evansville at the West Haven Gun Club on Wednesday May 20 at 6 30 PM. The evening will feature the introduction of the Schlumberger formation testing tool presented and discussed by E E Penninen of Tulsa Oklahoma. Mr Finklea serves as the Schlumberger area staff assistant.

Detroit police report four schoolboys trapped inside a railroad hopper when a load of salt shifted burying them. Two friends, Danny Lawler and Robert Binder, escaped. Rescuers, using improvised tools, could not reach the victims in time. Names identified: Norman Clatterbuck fourteen, Ricky Contardi twelve, Jimmy Healy thirteen, and David Lachapelle ten, all of Detroit. An engineer moved the car to prevent further piling.
President Eisenhower hailed Nixon's calm under pressure as crowds surged at the airport reception in Washington. A security guard detail from Ft Myer stood watch while bands from local high schools played. Republicans planned a broad show of support and a House tribute praised Nixon for his courage during the volatile Latin American tour.
Memorial services were held at Fort Campbell Ky for Carl G Payne of Mt Vernon and four other paratroopers killed April 23 during a mass air drop. The ceremony honored the five men at the 502nd Airborne Battle Group site with Col Talton W Long and Chaplains officiating. Payne had 16 jumps and Funeral services followed in Mt Vernon.
In Honolulu, M Set. Ned Lyle will place a wreath on the casket of one of four unidentified Korean War dead at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific Puowaina Hill. The selected remains will be flown to Arlington for burial beside other Unknown Soldiers. Lyle earned a Distinguished Service Cross for hill fighting in 1951 and called the honor very great.
Glenn Metzger will celebrate 35 years of service with Illinois Bell Telephone Company on May 18. Mt Vernon Centralia and Alton employees will host a picnic at the state game farm to honor him. Metzger began as a line man in 1923 and has worked as lineman and line foreman before a 1952 transfer to Mt. Vernon. He lives with his wife Thelma and children Morris and Lois on Salem Road. son Don attends McKendree College and Norman serves in the U S Marine Corps.
A U A Jefferson Lines bus left a rain slick highway near Denison Texas striking a tree and a power pole. A young mother Shirley Stith about 21 and her daughter Melanie Jane about 1 ½ were killed by electrocution. Irvine Ebola of Kansas City said the driver swerved to avoid a auto and the baby fell from a six foot gap. Four others were treated at a local hospital. The bus carried 18 passengers plus the driver en route from Dallas to Minneapolis.
A four-engine Navy transport plane crashed in clear weather near Taft California killing five crew members. The RTV Super Constellation struck a hill and exploded as it was ferried from Ontario Airport to Moffett Field near San Francisco. Identification of the dead was withheld pending notification of families.
Two thefts were reported to Mt. Vernon police on Wednesday and today. Four hub caps were stolen from a 1958 Chevrolet at the Brehm-Hanna lot on south Tenth street. Eddie Smith reported his bicycle stolen from his address at 411 south 21st.
The report describes Sputnik I as a 184 pound sphere with a 6.4 inch diameter and Sputnik II as a 1,120 pound cone carrying a dog. Explorer I and II are tube shaped about 80 inches long while Vanguard I is a sphere 6.4 inches in diameter. The new satellite’s radio transmits on 20.005 megacycles and Moscow repeats dot dash dot dot in a musical tone. Solar and chemical batteries power the craft.
Navy announces two Regulus I missiles to be launched again Friday after Maine's first Brunswick launch. Cmdr. Daniel D. Decker says Wednesday training flight was very successful and satisfactory. The recoverable 500 mile range missiles stayed aloft about an hour before returning to base.
Secretary of the Army Wilber M. Brucker, in a Providence news conference, said nothing startling about the launch of Sputnik III. He noted the Russians might have tried several times and failed previously, and while acknowledging the achievement, urged credit for the feat.
SPRINGFIELD Ill Hospitals service Corp of Chicago the Blue Cross plan in Illinois must comply with a State Insurance Department order within 120 days to ensure all subscribers receive identical benefits regardless of hospitalization location. The order follows hearings on the Blue Cross Interplan Service Benefit Bank which handles out of state hospital claims. Hearing officer Lawrence A Berman found bank operations caused some subscribers to receive more or fewer benefits than their certificates, raising hospital care rate issues. A second Illinois Blue Cross plan Illinois Hospital Service Inc of Rockford was ordered May 2 to comply within 30 days.
Detailed weather report notes partly cloudy conditions in the southeast with considerable cloudiness and occasional showers and thunderstorms in the west and north today through Friday. Cooler air moves into the extreme north with highs mostly in the 70s to around 80 and overnight lows 55 to 65.
Weather continued in Illinois with showers and cooling forecast. Temperatures reached 70s and 80s, with Rockford at 87 and Chicago and Moline around 85. Early morning lows fell to 52 at Vandalia, and skies were fair to partly overcast.

CAPE CANAVERAL Florida a missile reportedly the Air Force highly secret Bull Goose guided decoy weapon was fired from the test center. The pint sized missile hugged the Atlantic and was out of sight in less than five seconds. Officials announced a launch but released few details.
Police in Caracas arrested three men on charges of planning to kidnap Vice President Nixon. Exiled security police of former dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez were connected to the plot. Only one suspect, Diogenes Antonio Caballeros Martinez, was identified. Caballeros allegedly worked with agents of the outlawed security police operating in Cucuta near the Venezuelan border. An investigation is ongoing with results to be published later.
William A. Welborn was elected director of the First National Bank of Woodlawn to succeed his late father Arthur P. Welborn. The Chicago resident has returned to Woodlawn to run the family drug store and joined the board at this week’s regular directors meeting.
J Curtis Starr prepares to retire as Jefferson County Red Cross chairman at the 8:00 p m meeting in the circuit court room. Awards will recognize volunteers and groups for the 1956 57 year. Officers and directors for the coming year will be elected, and a Gruenther narrated film shown. all donors of $1 may vote.
