Washington AP The government eases travel for U S tourists to Cuba allowing travel agents to arrange group tours and hotel reservations and to pay Cuban firms directly. They may charter planes or ships to Cuba if the Cuban government agrees. prior limits blocked U S bank drafts and restricted visits to state organized trips or indirect routes.
President Carter and Congress approved a 20 billion stimulus to fund public works and jobs, predicting over 1.1 million Americans will gain work. The measure expands public service jobs, construction, and revenue sharing across states, with state allocations between 30 and 500 million each.
Protestant militants abandoned an 11 day general strike in Northern Ireland after failing to cripple the economy. The United Unionist Action Council headed by Rev. Ian Paisley halted the action at midnight Friday, saying the struggle would continue until victory. Police reported three deaths and 105 arrests amid violence, with an estimated province cost of about 2.5 million. Roy Mason praised residents for resisting intimidation and violence.

From March 1 1976 through May 2 this year 150 U S cases and Guam were recorded, up from 129 in the prior month, with a total US gonorrhea count of 327 515 through May 7 and syphilis 7 455 cases, while declines in other strains suggest progress from ongoing public health campaigns.

The Rural Electrification Administration approved a 553000 loan for Tri-County Elec Cooperative at Mt. Vernon to serve 560 additional customers and lay 41 miles of distribution lines. The loan carries 5 percent interest for 40 years. A spokesman said the funds will extend and replace aging lines across Marion Jefferson and Washington Counties.

James R. Irving, 37, superintendent of the Illinois Youth Center at Valley View, is named by Gov. Thompson as chairman of the Illinois Parole and Pardon Board. The appointment, effective Monday, requires Senate confirmation and carries $30,000 annually. He replaces the late Robert Peel of Hillsboro who died May 3.
CBS Chicago reported two Unification Church members solicited donations on city streets while walking normally. A man and a woman sat in wheelchairs selling carnations and candy, later photographed walking. Their street vending license was issued to the church. they claimed injuries from a traffic accident and pending surgery.
Mexico announced a policy easing drug user prosecutions, dropping charges against 1 943 people including at least 18 Americans. The Atty. Gen. office said those freed would be released within a week, while foreign names were not immediately available. About 600 Americans remain jailed on drug charges.
Mt Vernon Township High School will present a Swing Choir and Stage Band concert Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. Will I 84 a noted oilman of Southern Illinois died Friday at Barnes Stanley Scull in Birmingham on Sept 30 1919. He was an Army veteran and member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survived by wife one son Littleton Colorado and Mary Barker Bloomington eight grandchildren two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceded by his parents two sisters and one brother.
