Nashville man found guilty in daughter's murder
A Belleville man, Wallace R. Hancock, 39, is convicted by a Circuit Court jury of deviate sexual assault and murder in the death of his 20 month old daughter Tanya Marie. The verdict rejects an insanity defense. Hancock showed no emotion as he was led away. Jurors deliberated 1 hour 40 minutes, finding he knew right from wrong when he dropped Tanya from a rural St. Clair County bridge on November 4. The trial was moved to Washington County due to pretrial publicity. A pathologist testified there was evidence only of sodomy on the charge of rape, which was dismissed. Public defender Rodger Hay said an appeal would be filed. Judge John J. Hoban set 30 days for post-trial motions before sentencing.
