Car hits tree arrest of Chicago man on highway 37

Chicago man Helc Latham Washington, 32, was arrested by state police after his car left the highway north of Dix and struck a tree. He spent the night in county jail with charges to be filed today.

Two Railway Deaths At Preston County Mine

Two Preston County mine employees were killed when a 10 ton locomotive they operated plunged through a 30 foot trestle near Kingwood West Virginia on Friday. The Associated Press reported the accident occurred at the mine site, prompting investigations by local authorities.

Pistol Packing Grandma Chases Robber Away

Chicago report of Mrs Marie Hoe Hoenecke a 43 year old grandmother at a South Side restaurant who glimpsed a man with a revolver and shouted a warning. She grabbed a .45 caliber pistol and confronted him causing the robber to flee in fear.

Rutherford to Teach Music at McLeansboro

F W Rutherford of Bluford was hired as music instructor for McLeansboro Township High School and the McLeansboro consolidated grade school. He previously led music departments at Weber Township High School and Bluford Grade School for two years. He is the son of the late Roy G Rutherford, jeweler and longtime Mt Vernon high school bandmaster.

Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Mt Vernon enters Hospital Week in its eighth year of service since opening October 24 1947. In 1954 the staff cared for 2071 patients and delivered 220 babies while handling 486 emergency cases and performing 345 surgeries. The hospital's charity totaled 20647 73 and it employs 36 full time and 12 part time staff with 7 full and 7 part time nurses. St Louisan 82 Drives Cab to Work Despite Age

William Harder 82, a St Louis cab driver, says age won’t stop him from work. He has never had an accident and won a $30 courtesy prize from his employer. A Sioux reservation native from International Falls Minnesota, he retired from railroading after 15 years and chose taxi work to stay among people. His rule is friendliness and helping the unfortunate, plus taking the shortest route.
