Mrs Edith Garrison wife of Ed Garrison died at home at 315 north Ninth street in Mt Vernon aged seventy four with a history of high blood pressure and a prior stroke. A lifelong Mt Vernon resident she married Ed Garrison on April 8 1903 and was active in First Methodist church. She is survived by her husband two sisters Mrs J Maxey and Mrs Edwin Rackaway of Mt Vernon and other relatives. Funeral at 2 30 Wednesday.

Warn Motorists and Callers On Mt. Vernon Fires
Mt. Vernon police report phone lines overwhelmed by yesterday afternoon’s fire, hindering officials. Officers used police cars and two way radio to notify off duty firefighters while a false alarm near Hawkins Million Dollar Hen Co. and traffic jams by motorists delayed fire trucks. Sets Record for Non Stop Flight In Small Plane
Max Conrad, father of nine, completed a coast to coast non stop flight from Los Angeles to LaGuardia Field in a Piper Pacer. He logged 23 hours 4 minutes 31 seconds, setting a new coast to coast non official speed record for light planes. The official light plane record is 30 hours 47 minutes set in 1938 by John M. Jones.

Nora Staley Dies Former Bluford Resident at 3 A.M.
Nora Staley, former Bluford resident, died at her Fairfield home at 3:00 this morning. She was married to Tra Staley. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Dixon and Crippin Funeral Home in Fairfield with Rev. Kent Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield. The body will stay at the funeral home until the service. friends may call until then.

Plan Higher Federal Tax On Gasoline
Washington May 14. The House Ways and Means Committee voted to raise federal taxes on cigarettes automobiles and gasoline in a tentative decision. Cigarettes would rise from seven to eight cents a pack. Gasoline from 1 14 cents to two cents per gallon. Passenger automobiles and motorcycles from seven to ten percent at the manufacturers level. The committee projects over half a billion dollars extra revenue, pushing the bill total above six billion dollars.

Dog Refuses to Leave Burning House in Du Quoin
In Du Quoin Illinois May 14 fire gutted a home of Mrs Henry Brown. Firemen battled to save a dog named Mickey that refused to leave the porch fearing the owner was inside. After hoses drove the pet away Mickey reentered the ruins while Mrs Brown escaped by a back door.

CENTRALIA Illinois May 14 Farmers in the Dix area alert for rabies in cattle after a sow died at a diagnostic lab. Dr Kenneth Shasek head of the Centralia lab said the cow may have caught rabies from a skunk fox or dog. Rabid cattle are rare and Ivan Crane was exposed while treating his sick cow.
