Death of Zacceus Akers at 82 in Enfield

Zaccheus Edgar Akers of Enfield died Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital after a three day stay. He was 82 years five months and 18 days old and the son of George and Endie Worthen Akers. He married Nora Dell Leatherman on December 22 1897. she preceded him in death eight years ago. Surviving children are Cletis Akers of Cleveland Ohio and Robert Akers of Enfield. Also five grandchildren and great grandchildren. He resided with grandson Carl Womack at 1205 South 22nd Street Mount Vernon. Funeral services are set for 12:00 p.m. Tuesday at General Post Church Enfield with Rev. Jimmie Savage officiating. Burial will follow at Hammack Cemetery. Emmett Funeral Home of Enfield is in charge.

Forgotten Mothers Honored by Mt Vernon Firms

Mt Vernon Illinois workers of Greenberg Mercantile Corp delivered gifts to 26 adopted mothers on Mother's Day. The program, called Adopted Mothers Day, has grown from about 800 gifts in 1956 to serve aged women lacking family attention. Clerks at the Tenth Street store and others adopted mothers, sharing meals and home visits while company officials keep names private.

First Proclamation By Bailey-Hospital Week

Virgil T. Bailey issued his first proclamation as mayor of Mount Vernon Illinois declaring May 12 18 National Hospital Week urging citizens to salute hospitals and staff and promote personal and community service in hospital careers.
