Mt. Vernon Social Notes and Hospital News

Rural Route resident C F Glover remained a patient at Barnes Hospital St Louis in room 02. Local residents and visitors from several towns traveled to Mt Vernon to spend time with relatives or conduct business including Lindas from Bluford Belle Rive Waltonville and Ina. Notable events include a new son Paul Irvin born to the Hale family and lengthy visits by many residents from nearby communities.

Greek Week at Southern Illinois University features week of events

Greek Week at Southern Illinois University Carbondale runs May 11 to 14 with dances, style shows, teas, card tournaments, and a grand May 13 dance in the gymnasiums. Honors include Most Valuable Fraternity Man and Sorority Girl, plus a display of trophies and pins in Old Main.

Pleasant Grove Women’s Society Meeting and Installations

Mrs. Sledge hosts Pleasant Grove Women’s Society of Christian Service on Fairfield Road with a luncheon and business meeting led by President Mrs. Earl L. C. Smith. Installation of officers includes Mrs. Smith as president and Mrs. Verne Melton as vice president, with several secretaries and coordinators named. Mrs. Milburn H. Smith presides over a Women of the Scripture lesson. Also note Block Unit Jefferson County Home Bureau meets at 729 North Eighth Street with Mrs. J. N. Cowen assisting. lessons on Program Planning and Sex Education for Young Children led by Mrs. Emily Goodin and Mrs. Margaret Young.

Mother Daughter Tea Presented by Logan St Baptist Church

The Intermediate and Young People Dept of Logan St Baptist Church hosted a mother daughter tea in the church dining room on Thursday. Ushers Mary Witter Yvonne Throgmorton Louise Goin and Marilyn Laughmiller greeted guests and corsages were given. Betty Anthis led the program with readings a What a Friend singalong a Lord's Prayer solo by Shirley Carr and a talk by Mrs. Gertrude Stone on the bond between mothers and daughters. Refreshments followed with decedent table decor while Marilyn Ethridge Betty Morgan helped pour. Sponsors included Mrs. Stella Wood and Grace Wilson with teachers Mrs. Rosemary Carnes Mrs. Bernice Hunt Mrs. Myrtle Luhn and Mrs. Archie Clements.

Lincoln P T A Holds Regular Meeting and New Officers

The Lincoln school P T A met on Thursday at 2 PM in the assembly room. New officers include President Mrs Dale Carpenter and Vice Presidents Mrs Basil Moss and Mrs E C Beckmeyer, with Mrs Jerry Bond as secretary and Mrs Reid Starkey as treasurer. Dr Clara Menger spoke on child guidance as past president Mrs Fred Reynolds received a pin. A social hour followed with refreshments.

Mr and Mrs Kenneth Carl Shepard of Bluford welcomed a son named Leland John born last evening at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr and Mrs Ernest Skelton of 308 Forest welcomed a daughter named Judith Opal born last night at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr and Mrs Leonard Crowley of Route 6 welcomed a daughter named Rebecca Sue born this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Cora Jane Roney Dies at 74 in Jefferson County

Mrs. Cora Jane Roney of 209 South Second Street died at 2:30 am at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital aged 74 years seven months. Funeral Sunday at Epworth Methodist Church with Rev. Outdoor show on South Ninth Street features miniature wooden replicas of early autos in Carp's window. Lasater Leaves Hospital After Embankment Crash

Harry A. Lasater of 409 North 12th Street was able to leave Good Samaritan Hospital this morning after being injured when his station wagon plunged down a steep embankment at the Markham City Illinois Central Viaduct Tuesday night. He suffered three fractured tibias and other injuries.

Kenneth Johnson, 14, of 628 Kensington, drove over a curb at 19th and College last night, knocking down a mailbox and stopping in the yard of Ray Hitchcock. The car was damaged and no injuries were reported.
