Weekend visits bring many local and out-of-town guests

Washington Iowa residents Mr and Mrs Lawrence Harland and neighboring families returned after visiting relatives in Opdyke Harmony and Rock Island. J J Jackson and Junie Moore attended business and social visits. Several residents traveled to Champaign Louisville and Chicago for illnesses travel and events. A young girl Janet Rae Cox underwent a tonsillectomy. Various locals conducted business in Mt Vernon Olney Robinson and nearby towns.

Death of Reuben Riley at 69 and funeral plans

Reuben Riley aged 69 of 809 S Tenth street died Monday at his daughter's home in Franklin Illinois. He was a retired farmer and will be buried at Oakwood cemetery after a 2 p m Wednesday funeral at Pulley Funeral Home conducted by Rev Marsh Harpoole. Survived by three sons Herman Thomas and Charles, one daughter Mrs Frank Chism, one brother John Riley, one sister Mrs Arthur Clark and six grandchildren. His wife Mary Elizbeth Clark preceded him in death in 1925. He was born September 22 1880 in Hamilton county. A Bakerville Baptist church member, he was predeceased by his parents and one brother Cpl Robert Lee Jones stationed at Fort Lawton Washington.

Mt Vernon Women’s Club honors Mrs Woodruff at dinner

Mrs Wyrle Ramp, newly elected president of the Mt Vernon Business and Professional Women’s Club, presided at Raobb’s Coffee House. Lorraine Baldridge praised Mrs Woodruff’s work as State Legislative chair and vice president of the State Federation and the Illinois Federation of B P W Clubs. The group awarded a gift and praised Mrs W B Myers as a historic mother of a federation president and club member. The evening included songs by Helen Bostic and a play review by Mrs J Curtis Starr.

Legion Auxiliary Sets May 27 Poppy Day Plans

The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion Home with Mrs. Noma Hooper presiding. They finalized Poppy Day for May 27 and elected delegates Christine Rockenmeyer Ruth Allen and Grace Downey to the Effingham district convention on June 8. Alternates are Mary Webb Pearl Schul Grace Webb Vide Hampton. Junior representative Nancy Corder will attend the Jini State school at MacMurray College Jacksonville June 20 to 28. The June meeting will be at Etna Stover’s country home on June 12 with a covered dish luncheon.

Altar Society Covered Dish Supper at St Marys

St Marys Altar Society hosts a covered dish supper Thursday May 11 at 6 30 in the church basement. The Mt. Vernon Rotary Club met at Hotel Emmerson with Rev. Paul Varanoff speaking on life behind the Iron Curtain. District Rotary Conference invites were extended for Marion May 10 and 11. L. Buford set to discuss The Paul Harris Foundation on May 11 at 1 30 p m. Rotarians and visitors attended. The Mt. Vernon Garden Club plans a joint meeting with Garden Globes at the Presbyterian church on Ashley Road May 12 at 10. Flower arranging will be discussed by Mrs. Lewis Carbondale with Mrs. Trevor Jeffries as well. Exhibits must be in by 10, box lunches requested, and a workshop will follow with members bringing flowers and related supplies for guidance.

Higginson Coberly Couple Betrothal and Wedding

Higginson and Coberly families announce the marriage of Betty Coberly to Edward Higginson. The April 3 ceremony occurred at Wesley Methodist with Rev. O E Connett officiating. Miss Woods Wins Final Audition For Muny Opera 1950

Janet Woods, among 200 applicants, was called back Monday after March auditions. Thirteen altos and thirteen sopranos were selected for the 1950 season. Rehearsals start May 11. Janet studies voice in St Louis with Mrs. Nussbaum, after praise from pianist Robert McDonald in Chicago. She previously starred in Sweethearts and Rio Rita at her high school.

Dahlgren Woman Sallie Wicks Dies in Local Hospital

Mrs. Sallie Wicks 79 of Dahlgren died at 10 15 am Monday at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital. She was daughter of the late Dr W H Bunton and Mary Charles Bunton and widow of Peter Wicks who died April 27 1916. A 65 year member of Dahlgren Methodist church she is survived by four sons Albert Detroit George Auburn Wash Owen Centralia Wash and Frank Dahlgren and four daughters Myrtle Muse Los Angeles Nana Sammons Tacoma Iva Dove Chicago and Flossie Garrison Dahlgren. Her brothers the Rev H W Bunton Mount Rose SD and Dr George W Bunton Hollywood Calif are Methodist ministers. Two daughters died in infancy.

General Hodge's Mother Is Dead

Mrs. Melissa Hodge mother of Lt. Gen. John R. Hodge died at 2 a.m. in Carbondale Illinois at 87 after a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral set for Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with burial in Prospect Cemetery Golconda. General Hodge commands the Army Corps at Fort Bragg and was briefly in Morea in 1948.

Eight-Year-Old Boy Hurt After Fall From Tractor

Bobby Joe Morgan eight is son of Mr and Mrs Joe Morgan of RFD 3 Mr Vernon. He was riding with his father plowing when he fell from the tractor and was struck by the plow causing a crushed chest and a broken collar bone. He was rushed to Jefferson County Memorial Hospital at 7 30 this morning in serious condition but expected to recover. He remained a patient at the hospital.
