Residents flock to Derby weekend amid visits and returns
A caravan of visitors and hometown residents populated Mt. Vernon and nearby towns this weekend. Families from Chicago, Chicago area, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Urbana, and other cities traveled to Mt. Vernon and Carmi for family visits, hospital stays, and Derby weekend activities, including Mrs. Frances DeMik and Mrs. Frieda Weir joining Dr. T. B. Williamson for the Kentucky Derby. Miss Phyllis Maxwell, 23, of Salem Road, suffered a severe fracture to her right arm and bruises in a Saturday evening automobile collision in St. Louis. Bob Anthony, driver of the other car, escaped with minor bruises. Maxwell was taken to St. John's Hospital for treatment and X rays. The two were returning from downtown St. Louis to Webster Groves when the crash occurred. the other driver was arrested.
