Harriet Irvin dies at 79 former Mt Vernon teacher

Harriet Irvin, a Mt. Vernon teacher for 40 years, died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Methodist Home in Lawrenceville Illinois. She was 79 years five months and 25 days old. Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery after services at Myers Chapel conducted by Dr Don Crocker. She was born November 9, 1885, in Jefferson County and is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mattie Browning, plus several nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Methodist church White Shrine and the Order of Eastern Star.

Fire Destroys Storage Shed Near Mt Vernon Home

Rural firefighters answered a Tuesday alarm at W. P. Jones Route 7 Mt. Vernon to a shed blaze that gutted a small storage structure. Contents reported lost include a motor scooter tools and a vehicle accessory.

Five Drivers Fined in Circuit Court

Five traffic offenders were fined in circuit court yesterday. Albert G. Povolish of Nashville Alabama had no driver's license and paid $20. Mary H. Statler of Cape Girardeau Missouri was fined $15 for speeding. William N. Malcom of Centralia was fined $10 for failure to reduce speed. Donald O'Connor of Chicago was fined $10 for speeding. A USF-105F jet fighter crashed tonight into an American dependent housing area about 20 miles southwest of Tokyo. Two people were killed and eight injured, two seriously, according to a U.S. military spokesman.

Mississippi Flood Ebbs Start Cleanup Meeting

Questions of parents and high school students planning to attend the University of Illinois this fall will be answered at a meeting here next Tuesday, university officials said. The 5:30 p.m. session at Mt. Vernon Township High School will be led by Lyle E. Snyder and Dale M. Rutherford, with Mrs. Glenn E. Moore assisting. Snyder is a past president of the Dads Association. Rutherford is the current vice president. The discussion will cover enrollment, scholarships, student help, housing, and student life.

Jefferson county sheriff's deputies investigated a break in reported by Mrs. Shirley Howard at the Howard residence near Dix. The front door and a bedroom door were damaged and a lock broken. No belongings were believed stolen.

Autos Collide On Broadway At Mt Vernon

One minor automobile accident was reported in Mt Vernon on Tuesday in the 1000 block of Broadway. Cars driven by Andrew K. Reid Jr., 21, Cherry Drive, and George R. Burnham, St. Louis, collided. The St. Louis car was damaged about $875. the Mt Vernon auto had no damage.

Divorce Granted to Marjorie Allen in Circuit Court

A divorce was granted yesterday in circuit court to Marjorie Allen from Leroy Allen on cruelty charges. She was awarded custody of two children and alimony and support pending a specified sum. The couple, married July 1951, reside in the area.

Tater Named To U. of I. Student Groups

William M. Plater of 1305 North Street was named to two student positions at the University of Illinois. He joined 33 major chairmen for Winds Union Student Activities programs for 1963-66 and 32 named to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Council.
