Prices paid on the Mt. Vernon livestock market rose for hogs with top weights reaching higher levels. Buyers showed strong demand for local pork, while boars and sows followed the broader trend of price gains across the regional market.
Fred Whittington died at 63 on Thursday at his home in Hurst WW. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the dia Funeral Home. Survivors include daughter Madge Trumbettee of Hu, a former Mt. Vernon resident.
Minnie Williams of south 21st street dies and funeral is set for Sunday at Mere Chapel with Rev Card VGC Trams officiating. Burial at Fitzgerald cemetery, body lies in state at Myers Chapel after 4:00 p m Saturday. survivors include four daughters Mae Crews of Mt Vernon and sister Mrs Nelhechanan of Wasnoka Oklahoma. She was born December 1872 in Belle Rive, daughter of T. T. and Mary Barnes Cofeid, married to Hugh Williams who died in 1923.
Grace Johnston of 404 South Seventh Street died at 2 30 am at Lowry Nursing Home at age 87 years one month and 20 days. Born January 15 1874 in Jefferson County she was the daughter of Jacob and Sarah Schmitt. Survived by grandson Kenneth Long of Round Lake Illinois two nephews A E Schmitt and Dr Bert Schmitt Mt Vernon and two stepsons Roy Johnston Inn and Rex Johnston Columbus Ohio. She was a member of First Methodist Church.
Summersville grade school earned two firsts at the state music contest held April 29 in Mt. Vernon. Jane Cutrell won a piano solo and led a twirling quintet comprising Jane Cutrell, Ann Purcell, Judy Winder, Randy Rankin, and Sherry Watkins. Both entries had previously won firsts at the district contest.
Art Milward resigns to take a state education post. Astronaut Alan Shepard begins final prelaunch procedures for the Redstone mission. He dons a bulky space suit, tests movement and helmet seal, and proceeds to the van and launch pad amid security and crowd quiet. Grissom and crew monitor systems as Shepard nears the capsule atop the rocket under bright lights.
After liftoff the capsule jettisoned its escape tower and rotated to lead with the heat shield as Shepard rode backward through a weightless period. He later surfaced in the ocean, climbed out of the capsule, and was whisked to a hospital for tests before a Washington visit for a hero's welcome.
A three story brick home in Pittsburgh Sheraden district burned early today killing six. The victims were Robert Warfel, 34, his wife Gay, 32, their daughter Bobbie, 5, and sons Tim, 6, Martin, 2, and Billy, 3.

Mt. Vernon rural firemen answered three alarms Thursday. They controlled a one acre grass fire at the home of Guy Wood on Fairfield Road and another grass fire west of town on U S Route 460. Firemen made a third call administering oxygen to a man outdoors.

Tomorrow is White Clover Day in Mt. Vernon. Members of the Turner Boehm Post Amvets and the auxiliary will be downtown offering the little white flower for sale to the general public. All funds raised will be used by the Amvets for rehabilitation service work for veterans and their families.
A Florida spices laden trailer truck rolled 50 feet down a steep embankment north of Mt. Vernon near Route 37. Driver Mitchell Barnhill 35 Orlando Fla uninjured after reaching under the dashboard to fix a radio wire caused the mishap. Car driven Lawrence Moore 21 LaGrange Ill went into a ditch earlier on the same route during rain. Moore unhurt.
Mobile Alabama reports describe the balloon drifting from the Gulf of Mexico toward a carrier after reaching 40,000 feet. Prather fell into the water as the gondola detached and drifted, later dying aboard the carrier about 80 minutes after rescue. Navy divers and helicopters pursued the gondola and recovered the unconscious flyer. Autopsy opened at Pensacola NAS.
