A Mr. Vernon man reported receiving a death notice in a plastic cover mailed with a clipping. The notice instructed sending 1.00 to The Register News. The Register-News states it does not sell plastic memorials or engage in such business.
George Paul Mitchell 87 of 409 North Washington McLeansboro died yesterday afternoon at 3 30 in Franklin Hospital Benton He was a retired farmer Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 PM at Donelson Funeral Home McLeansboro Rev John Maulding and Rev Luther Upton will officiate Burial in Blooming Grove Cemetery Body to lie in state at Donelson Funeral Home after four this afternoon He was born December 18 1872 to John W and Mary Carolyn Mitchell He married Jennie Henson on December 27 1956 She survives Also surviving are brothers Albert and Kenneth Mitchell both of McLeansboro and sisters Daisy Tyler of Keenes and Mrs Oliver Turns of Jacksonville IL He was a member of the Blooming Grove church.
Funeral services for Sally E Black will be held Friday at three oclock at Donelson Funeral Home McLeansboro for Mrs E Black of 401 East Market Street who died Tuesday morning at her home Dr William Lyons of Enfield will conduct the services Survivors include her sister Cora lie Park of McLeansboro

New York AP report states Matthew J. Connelly and T. Lamar Caudle, former Truman administration officials, surrendered to start two year prison terms for conspiracy to defraud the government. They sought to block an income tax evasion case against Irving Sacks of St. Louis after a lengthy court fight. Connelly, 51, surrendered in New York. Caudle, 56, at Charlotte, with Caudle pursuing a pardon push in Wadeboro, North Carolina. Caudle is to Tallahassee and Connelly to Danbury for imprisonment.
Pittsburgh AP report says Judge John L. Miller directed a jury to return a verdict for Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co after 20 days of testimony. Plaintiff Otto Pritchard seeks 14.4 million dollars claiming smoking Chesterfield cigarettes caused his lung cancer and removal of his right lung in 1953.
Mt Vernon traders noted soybeans at 2.04 wheat 1.90 and corn 1.08 per bushel in this afternoon pricing update from Mt Vernon gathered market sources.

Former Mt. Vernon resident Adrian M. Miller has been named manager of RCA Film Recording and TV System Center in Hollywood. RCA will open the center next week. Miller will head a team of film and TV tape recording system designers and engineers. Miller is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton A. Miller of 724 North Eighth Street. May 7 is White Clover Day in Mt. Vernon proclaimed by Mayor Virgil T. Bailey. AMVETS post and auxiliary will offer white clovers downtown with no fixed charge. donations aid hospitalized veterans, orphans, youth and servicemen. Proceeds largely benefit Marion Veterans Hospital. Co-chairs are Leslie E. Mannen and Howard Phillips. Proclamation urges citizens to wear white clover in support. The item ends with a 1850 quote by Bismarck.
In Decatur Ti AP three construction crew members were injured when the Mayon High School gymnasium roof collapsed during remodeling. Damage estimated at 300000. Nine other workers and 190 students were unharmed. Injured are Ellis Furry 42 in serious condition Don Engel 28 and Harold Miller 47 both in fair condition, all from Decatur. The incident occurred 10 miles north of Decatur.
A 17 year old girl Sandra Henson ran away April 22 from the Baptist Children's Home in Centralia and remains missing with no leads. She called a friend the next day but would not reveal her whereabouts. Her father is a minister in White County. She had minor injuries from a prior incident March 10 after being found wandering north of town.
New York AP reports Robert Smith 38, a laborer, vaulted a guard rail at the Central Park Zoo and patted a lion on the head. The lion roared as onlookers screamed. Policewomen pulled Smith back over the railing and charged him with disorderly conduct.
A South Korean navy frigate repelled a North Korean torpedo boat assault off the east coast about two miles south of the truce line. The clash lasted under five minutes with no casualties or damage reported. North Koreans pressed for UN forces to leave Korea in Panmunjom talks as students in Pusan protest for a new National Assembly.
