Liberty Ship The Cliffs Victory Enters Illinois River
The 620 foot ocean going vessel The Cliffs Victory squeezed past Beardstown Illinois last night on its way to the Great Lakes to be used as an ore carrier. Tow operated at about four miles an hour by the Tenaru river tug owned by American Barge Lines. The ship passed Meredosia under a foot and a quarter clearance at the Wabash railroad bridge as it navigated the Illinois Waterway. Cleveland Cliffs Company of Cleveland bought the war surplus ship and sails it from Baltimore to the Great Lakes via the Mississippi and Illinois waterways.
