Uninvited 1500 Pound Steer Roams Peoria Basement

A 1500 pound steer wandered into Mrs. Mary E. Welch’s West Bluff basement in Peoria Illinois at about 2 AM. Police and packing-house workers discussed options but a smasher’s head blow and a winch rescue finally freed the animal which had escaped earlier from a farmer’s truck en route to the stockyards. The steer later was found on Bradley University tennis courts before heading back toward the basement entrance.

South Hickory Hill PTA wraps year with program and officers

The South Hickory Hill Parent Teachers Association held its final meeting of the year on Friday April 29 with a basket lunch. New officers were installed: Roma Morgan president Helen Edmis on vice president Opal Black secretary treasurer. Aileen Jones presented honorary pin to past president Geraldine Bodine and former presidents were recognized. A school program featured songs, choruses, recitations and plays by students.

Gloria Schumm 34 sues Wallace Beery estate for 104135 alleging a son is hers and Beery denied paternity in a will. Petition filed yesterday after Beery's death on April 15. she rejected a $20000 settlement offer. Estate valued up to 2 million but will states no inheritance to the child.

Voice of America improves reach through Russian jamming wall

Assistant Secretary of State George V. Allen reported that Voice engineers using new transmission devices have begun to break through intensified jamming in Russia. He noted partial success in overcoming interference with higher power broadcasts to the Soviet Union, though tonal quality is slightly reduced.

AMVET Auxiliary Holds Meeting With Prizes Awarded

The AMVET Auxiliary held a regular meeting Monday night in the club rooms. Prizes were awarded to Roxie Sammons Jean Carpenter and Myra Murray. The entertainment committee led by Fern Webb Cele Atlas and Bertha Pearson organized refreshments and games. Leonard Mendendall and Vernon are noted as parents of a seven pound 14 ounce son born at Jefferson Memorial Hospital at 3 58 a m. Mr and Mrs David Welel of 3004 Sterling El Vista Peoria are parents of a 7 1 2 pound daughter born Tuesday. Mr Weigel, a former Mt Vernon resident, is linked to the family.
