Boy Dies After Drinking Heating Oil Near St. Charles

A boy about 2 years old, Michael Lawrence, died in a hospital from ingesting fuel oil. His father Wilburn L. Lawrence told police the child found a can of oil bought for heating. The incident occurred near St. Charles Tuesday.

Clara Boswell Dies at 85 in Wayne City

Clara Boswell 85 of Wayne City died at 11 30 am yesterday at the family home. Born August 10 1870 in Wayne County she was the daughter of Ephraim and Eliza Gray. Her husband Logan Boswell died in 1932. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm at Olive Branch Church conducted by Rev N A Williams burial at Garrison. Body lies in state at home after 6 pm today. Survived by son William Boswell Wayne City a sister Laura Gammon McLeansboro and sister Laucretia Jones Wayne City. brother John Gray Oakland Missouri. One son Charlie and brothers Johnson Wilson Abraham Gray preceded her in death.

Five Auto Accidents Reported in Mt Vernon

Five accidents occurred in Mt Vernon with no injuries. At 10 30 a truck driven by Earl J Warner sideswiped a parked car on North street. A 6 30 am crash on Second and Main involved Norva Gutzler and Rob ert H Wiggins with a $5 fine for following too closely. A 5 20 am truck driven by Robert Bittikifer knocked a parking meter and hit Frank Parker’s car due to brake failure. At 2 15 pm a car driven by Peter A Lauris collided with J R Tate’s pickup at Tenth and Jordan. At 11 45 pm Clara Kolmer and Jerry D Sanders were in a collision at 18th and Casey.

The Jefferson County Association for Retarded Children held its anniversary banquet at the L and N Cafe. Father James P. Burke opened with an invocation. Charles DeWitt introduced the advisory board including Father Burke and J Lester Buford. Mrs Karl Smiley of Peoria spoke on parent perspectives and need for teachers and community acceptance. Ray Graham, Illinois director of special education, stressed support, funding, research, and integrated programs for handicapped children. Attendees included state legislators and leaders from multiple civic groups. Benediction by Rev Lester Pifer.

Fire Destroys 30 Chickens On The Tolle Road

A small brooder house four miles north of Mt Vernon on Tolle Road burned at 11:30 last night. Thirty young chickens were destroyed along with several tools. Rural firefighters arrived to find the building a total loss at Lester Huston’s home.
