Many residents traveled to Mt Vernon Springfield Jacksonville and other nearby cities on business visits and family trips. A death in Brookland Ark prompted a family funeral trip as well.

Talent Quest District Finals Tonight at Granada Theatre
The district finals in the Stars of Tomorrow contest will be held tonight at the Granada theatre in two shows. Eleven contestants perform in the first program at 7:30, with five seeded finalists vying for the grand prize. The 9:30 program grants Tonight's winner a chance to advance to a Kansas City contest for a midwestern screen test and a free Hollywood trip.

Five Guns Stolen From Mt V Store
Allan Dulaney reports five firearms stolen last night from Sportl and Sporting Goods at 1504 Broadway. Thieves forced a rear door window, unlocked the night latch, and escaped with two .22 rifles, an eight millimeter rifle, a .12 gauge shotgun, and a .16 gauge shotgun. No other merchandise was taken.

The Illinois Senate approved raising old age and blind pension ceilings to 65 dollars a month with biannual cost of living adjustments. Lytton Hub founder built Chicago retail empire
The Hub owner led a Chicago store from 1887 on Jackson and State, expanded to an 18 story Loop building in 1912, and opened branches in Evanston Joliet Oak Park and Gary. He handed control to his son in 1916, later returned as president, survived early panics, and commented on Roosevelt administration methods. He married Rose Waite in 1871. she died in 1916. He later wed Carlotta Doty in 1918. Surviving children include Walter and Mrs. Gertrude Benziger.
