Hearings Begin On Branch Banking in Illinois

Illinois House subcommittee hearings on branch banking opened with both sides claiming the plan will keep banking healthy in the state. Rep. William Harris said another hearing is planned and a recommendation to the full committee will follow in about a month. The bill would let banks form holding companies to buy and control other banks, a practice not yet allowed in Illinois. Indicted trio ran phony Chicago law firm

A former Loop attorney Selwyn E. Bates Archie Burton and Jessie Tolbert were indicted by a federal grand jury for creating a phony law firm to solicit accident victims. The scheme involved about 47000 and defrauding clients by settling claims without notice forging client endorsements on insurance checks and forged releases of liability. The men allegedly charged one third of settlements but kept all insurance proceeds.

Three Mental Escapees Captured in Illinois

EAST MOLINE Illinois AP three patients escaped from a maximum security section of the East Moline Mental Health Center were back in custody today. Two were picked up this morning and the third was apprehended shortly after the escape Tuesday night. They escaped through a second floor window by loosening a screen. Identified as William Langdon 24 of Princeville Gary Thompson of Moline and Scott Haskins 19 of Hampton.

58 Kegs of RR Spikes Are Stolen

A sheriff's report details the theft of railroad spikes from Burlington Northern Railroad in Jefferson County over the weekend. Det. Jack Gray of Centralia said more than 58 kegs, worth 65 dollars each, were taken from five locations, with 39.2 kegs from two crossings near the county line and smaller sums from other crossings. Each keg weighs about 200 pounds and contains 241 spikes. He suspects thieves used a single axle vehicle to haul them along the tracks.
