Petition Drive Seeks Monthly Pay for State Legislators

Over 500 Jefferson County residents sign petitions seeking a state constitution amendment to switch lawmakers’ salaries from a lump sum two year payment to a monthly system. Organizers of the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce urge returns by April 9 and note notarization will occur by mid month. Statewide, more than 375,000 signatures are needed by May 1 to place the measure on the November ballot. Petitions are available at the chamber office on Frontage Road near the I 97 interchange.

Burglary Targets Home Truck and Office Stolen Items

Three guns and a bow were stolen in a Monday burglary from Ernest Dean Harlow’s mobile home at 631 Bell Street. A pickup truck at Larry Tice’s residence was hit for a CB radio and a failed eight track deck theft. Travelers Insurance office on Main Street saw a stamp and cash loss with no forced entry.

Miss Dominion of Canada to Lead Rend Lake Parade

Normande Jacques, Miss Dominion of Canada, will be parade marshal for Rend Lake's annual parade on May 22 and serve as judge for Miss Rend Lake pageant May 18 and 20. She will attend the Rend Lake Festival Ball as guest of honor amid the festival run May 15–23. Four Drivers Ticketed In Mt Vernon Accidents

Four drivers were ticketed in seven Mt Vernon accidents reported to city police. Incidents include Vicki L. Miller and Clinton S. Debris lines Canton streets as Mississippi National Guard joins local police to enforce a 10 pm curfew. In Cabot Arkansas the main street lies flattened and 60 National Guardsmen are deployed. 35 Air Force security policemen and 40 state troopers assist crews. Centralian Battles But Lands In Jail

A 39 year old Centralia man who kicked in a tavern door at Gables Tavern Route 460 west of Mt Vernon clashed with deputies and state police. He refused searches and resisted arrest, was subdued and taken to county jail where he remained pending formal charges.
