Mrs Ruth York Escapes Death In Truck Fire

Mrs Ruth York formerly of Mt Vernon narrowly escaped death when the truck carrying four people burst into flames near Colby Kansas while en route to Thornton Colorado Mrs York daughter Jacque son-in-law Don Finney and grandson Danny were passengers They jumped out as the fire spread destroying the truck and Mrs York s belongings only her purse was saved A state patrolman attributed the fire to combustion from a severe sandstorm earlier.

Mt Vernon quoted grain and eggs prices at 10:00 a.m. including soybeans 4.47, wheat 3.20, corn 2.49, and butter eggs varying by grade in St Louis. Cattle hogs and sheep receipts are forecast for Tuesday with 5,000 hogs, 1,700 cattle, 200 sheep. In New York, stocks edged higher as leading index rose 0.8 percent in February with January revised to 1.5. Dow opened up slightly. Merck rose, U S Steel gained, and volume traded around 1451 million shares.

Weekend thefts hit cash and CB radios citywide

Police report seven offenses over the weekend. Carrie Combs lost 200 from her blue bank bag inside a purse at Rail Splitter Cafe Saturday between 6 and 6 30 AM. Bill Gossage reported a 159 Privateer CB radio taken from his car. Mark Hefner said a 170 Regency CB radio disappeared Friday night from his vehicle. Mt Vernon Distributing at 410 S 10th St was burgled Saturday night with tools and an AM FM radio stolen.

Construction Begins At Humane Shelter In Jefferson County

Ground breaking at the Jefferson County Humane Society site marks the start of a new humane shelter to be completed by early summer. Don Schubert Enterprises is the general contractor for buildings near the city’s sewage treatment plant. The two structures include a main 24 by 80 foot building with offices and multiple rooms and a 12 by 18 foot rabies control building. The Mt Vernon city council and Jefferson County board each contribute 25,000 dollars. Public hours will be daily after completion, with plans for a county wide donation and volunteer drive and a large explanatory meeting forthcoming.

Break-ins reported in several homes and business

Doris J. Combs of 1308 Cherry said someone entered her home between 6 30 p m Saturday and 7 30 p m Sunday and stole towels sheets pillow cases and draperies. Mrs Floyd Slocum of Belle Rive said her CB radio antenna was broken off or sawed off her car at the VFW club after 7 15 p m Saturday. Russell Huston of Route 7 reported a burglary at Huston's Laundry, 500 Fairfield Road, Saturday morning at 7 50 a m. Detectives were investigating with few details available.

FBI burglaries targeting Socialist Workers offices stunned officials

FBI agents broke into New York offices of the Socialist Workers party and the Young Socialist Alliance from 1960 to 1966, carrying out 92 burglaries in predawn London darkness. The disclosures come in 354 pages of FBI files obtained by the party in a $27 million suit alleging unconstitutional harassment of legal political activity.

Escapees From St Louis Custody In Mt Vernon Police Chase

Two women escaped from a state mental hospital in St Louis and wounded Officer Wes Clemens with a can opener during a pursuit through Oakwood cemetery in Mt Vernon. Police recovered two knives and two can openers, then moved the pair to the Anna state hospital on an emergency commitment.

Red Cross Collects 171 Pints In Two Day Bloodmobile Visit

The Red Cross Blood mobile gathered 171 pints of blood during a two day visit to Central Church of Christ in Mt. Vernon. The goal was 230. 215 donors appeared but some were rejected, leaving 171 pints collected. Thursday had 62 donations from 69 arrivals and Friday had 109 donations from 138 arrivals.

Union sources say 1974 75 wages fell 50 cents an hour due to an 11 cent per hour cost of living ceiling in the 1973 contract. Trucking talks were suspended last week and resume today. Rank and file members in union halls nationwide expected to reject 85 rents more per hour and a week long fringe-benefit rise over 39 months. Detroit Local 2909 cartage division voted 898 to 24 and steel hauling division 160 to 18 to reject the latest offer and back a strike. A member warned, We have lost so much in the past contract you wouldn't believe it.

Police report several vehicle incidents over the weekend. James Dodson, 17, cited for following too closely after rear ending another car at Broad Way and 27th Street. Norman Galloway’s parked car damaged at downtown IGA by Alice Grigg. George Cash’s car damaged after striking Eva Henn at 34th Street and Broadway, with Cash cited for following too closely. Beulah Davis and Buddy Oxford involved in major damage collision at 9th and Westcott. Davis cited for failure to yield. Robert Williams reported damage to his parked car at Good Samaritan Hospital. William Morris said hit and run damaged his car at 8th Street and Broadway. Morris noted minor damage. Other accidents at 10th Street and Waltonville Road and DeMent’s Ice Cream Parlor lacked full reports.
