Record Taxes Hit Richland County In 1950 Levy

Olney Illinois March 29 County Clerk R W Piper announced a record one million dollars in taxes for Richland County taxpayers. About half the levy falls on Olney property as the county property value reached 42 429 836 in 1950.

A double ring ceremony conducted by Elder W W Colvin at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Mt Vernon on Saturday March 24 at 6 p.m united Wanda Stewart and David Haire. The bride daughter of Mr and Mrs William Roberson of 1023 Lamar Ave Mt Vernon wore a gold and grey checked suit with navy accessories and a red rosebud corsage. Matron of honor was Mrs William Page. best man was William Page. Singers Mrs Betty Edwards and pianist Mrs Harold Hutchins performed. The bride mother wore a green suit. A reception followed at the bride’s parents home. The couple left for a short wedding trip. Groom son of Mr and Mrs John Haire of 310 Wilson St Anna.

Nellie Malone Henry 85 Dies in Mt. Vernon

Nellie Malone Henry of 312 South Fifth Street died at 8 last night in Jefferson County Memorial Hospital at age 85. She lived in Mt. Vernon all her life and had been ill for some time. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at Myers Chapel with Rev. F. Murray Haworth, burial in Oakwood Cemetery. She was born February 8 1866 in Mt. Vernon daughter of William and Jemina Malone and married Edward Henry who survives. Also surviving are one daughter Selby Miller Grand Rapids Michigan four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Prohibition Loses in Texas House Vote

In Austin on March 29 the Texas House killed a state-wide prohibition amendment 15 to 5 after spectators in the gallery displayed opposing cards. The crowd, about 1,000 wets, chanted and waved cards reading it am against prohibition while the drys carried WCTU cards. The vote ended the bid for a state referendum on the issue.

Communist police strike after mass firings in Vienna

About 100 Communist police demonstrated in front of Vienna City Police headquarters after a one hour strike last night. The protest followed the city government dismissing 267 police officials, most of them Communists, this morning.

Margaret Rainey Clinard Morgan former Mt. Vernon resident died at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Belleville TK Hospital. She lived at 6162 Morgan Ave Belleville and funeral services are at Pete Gaerdner Funeral Home Belleville. She is survived by husband Luna Morgan two sons Homer Clinard East St Louis Roland Clinard New Mexico three brothers James William Orval Rainey Mt Vernon and sister Julia Sutton Burnett Mt Vernon. She was predeceased by her parents one sister and five brothers.

Father of Mrs. K. E. Greene Dies in Minnesota

Emil Peterson of Elwablk Minnesota dies after two months illness and six weeks after his wife’s death. He is 78 and survived by four sons and three daughters. Mrs. Greene, en route to Minnesota to bring her father to Mt. Vernon, was halted by State Police in Vandalia to learn of the death. Funeral services will be held tomorrow in Biwabik.
