Rankin to push pension bill on House floor

Mississippi Democrat Representative John E Rankin aims to use a Civil War era rule to bring his veterans pension bill to the House floor. As veterans committee chairman he can invoke the rule to advance a bill granting World War I and II veterans a 90 dollar monthly pension at age 65.

Mt Vernon Wins 29 Firsts in Southern Illinois Music Contest

Mt Vernon high school captured 29 first division ratings at the Southern Illinois district music contest, including vocal solo, string and band solos and ensembles, with 13 second division awards. The event drew 800 students from 34 schools, with a second session on April 9 and state finals set for April 29 at Lamphier high school in Springfield.

Talent Quest Finals Thursday at Granada

The Illinois finals of the Stars of Tomorrow talent quest are set for Granada Theatre next Thursday evening March 31. An elimination starts at 7:30 with 11 contestants. five advance to the 9:30 grand finals. Judges will be from cities not represented in the contest. Mt. Mt. Vernon Woman Sentenced to State Reformatory

Sheriff J. Chris Johnston delivered Ela Jones, 41, to the state reformatory for women at Dwight Hl after she pleaded guilty to manslaughter in circuit court. Jones will serve one to 14 years for the fatal February 5 shooting of Rosa Chapman, also colored, in Mt. Vernon.

Jefferson county officers investigate a theft at The Gables tavern west of Mt. Vernon. The incident last week involved $155 in cash and $466 worth of whiskey plus several liquor cases reported by county authorities.

Local Boy Severely Cuts Foot Chopping Wood

Charles Donoho a 14 year old Bluford youth suffered a severe cut to his right foot while chopping wood at home Saturday afternoon. He received treatment in a local physician's office with stitches applied.
