Unofficial totals show the top seven Democratic delegates and top four Republican delegates advancing to their party conventions. The list includes candidate names with committed presidential choices, plus alternates and multiple uncommitted finishes across Republican and Democratic delegates.
Israeli Foreign Minister Yigal Allon said the American veto on a UN Security Council resolution criticizing occupation averted a far reaching crisis with Washington. In Damascus a Syrian official denounced the veto while the United States said it would hinder momentum for Arab Israeli negotiations. A PLO official in Vienna pledged to fight terror groups but cautioned some are beyond reach. Scranton condemned Israel’s occupation as an obstacle to peace but rejected claims it seeks to change Jerusalem's religious character.
Springfield AP report notes Republican James Thompson tussles with Daniel Walker for the November governor post as he blasts ethics reform while questions linger over a possible third party bid and whether Daley influence shapes the race. Walker keeps options open, even hinting at possible support for Thompson.
Mt Vernon hosts National Commander Paul Welch of Ohio and National Auxiliary President Toni Gomulinski of Maryland Monday March 29 at a 12 30 p m luncheon and reception at Amvets Post No 4. Post and auxiliary members and friends are invited to greet the officials during the Illinois tour kickoff.
Federal indictments in Raleigh charge 14 current or former military personnel with conspiring to import heroin valued at over 300 million dollars. The scheme used Air Force tanker planes and hidden cargo from U Tapao Thailand to bases including Mather, Travis, Seymour Johnson, and Langley, with heroin moved in false bottoms and black bags. Arrests occurred in coordinated raids by military police, federal agents, and local police.
Good Samaritan Hospital has been accredited by the Joint Commission of Hospitals through January 21, 1978 after an on site survey by Joint Commission field representatives. The accreditation signals adherence to JCAH standards and places the hospital among about 4,800 general hospitals nationwide. The Joint Commission notes surveys are voluntary.
Illinois files suit in three counties against 14 railroads for failing to install light reflecting crossbuck signs at every grade crossing. The 1973 order gave 24 years to comply, with penalties from 500 to 2000 dollars per day for noncompliance if found in violation of the Public Utilities Act.
New York AP reports that influenza history underpins a U S vaccination push. Dr Edwin D Kilbourne of Mount Sinai says risk is too high to skip vaccines. President Ford asks Congress for 135 million to vaccinate 215 million Americans to avert a 1918 19 type pandemic and notes a Fort Dix swine flu outbreak. Kilbourne says the initiative is scientist driven and urgent with expected human transmission of swine virus.

The Red Cross Bloodmobile collected 62 pints of blood, 64 short of its quota, on the first day of its visit to Mt Vernon. A total of 77 potential donors appeared. It was at the Central Church of Christ from noon to six p.m., with officials hopeful for a better turnout today.
A 4000-strong French regular fleet reached America on July 8 1778 and joined Washington in urging an assault on Newport R I. John Sullivan led an American landing on the island but a gale drove the French fleet off. Sullivan’s force was saved yet the alliance suffered strain as the fleets sailed away, a noted episode in alliance history. The World Almanac recalls.
