Mt Vernon Township High School artists earned about 40 awards at the Third Annual Southern Illinois Regional Scholastic Art Awards in the Mitchell Museum. Several works were selected for national judging in New York and are on display in the Bank of Illinois lobby during National Youth Art Month. Thompson Signs $1 Million Mine Subsidence Bill
Governor James R. Thompson signed his first bill authorizing a $1 million federal mine subsidence project in the Belleville Maryville area. The measure lets the state Mines and Minerals Dept access abandoned mines to inspect and curb subsidence with contractors for the federal Bureau of Mines, three sites in Belleville and Maryville, funded by federal government.

Death notice for Robert M Daly Long Island native
The death of Robert Maxum Daly of Long Island New York occurred March 21 at his home. Born January 23 1912 he married Mabel R gh on July 7 1944 in Brownsville Texas. He worked for the Salt Lake Tribune then Time Incorporated retiring in 1960. Mrs Daly retired from Time in 1975 after 25 years. He served in WWII with Patton’s 13th Armored Division and is survived by his wife a sister and a step mother.
