A crowded social ledger details visits and travels of residents from Mt. Vernon and surrounding towns. Mrs. Floyd Johnson returns home from Good Samaritan Hospital in Harmony notes, while many others attend basketball tournaments in Champaign and visit relatives in Carbondale, Salem, Danville, and St Louis.
List of admitted patients including Dora McDermott Rosemary Thomason Sharon and Karen McKenzie and others. Discharged include Imogene Smith infant Donna Johnson and several adults with infants listed among the discharged.
Society notes a special Shields unit meeting on March 31 at 10 a.m. at Mrs. Marylea Ward’s home. The lesson is Rug Making with materials listed and members asked to bring sandwiches and cookies for lunch.

The Waltonville Home Bureau Unit met Friday at Mrs. Mason Newell’s home with 10 members present. The lesson covered Use of Top of the Stove Cooking Equipment, focusing on practical tips and safety.
The Summersville Parent Teacher Association meeting scheduled for Tuesday March 22 has been postponed to a later date.
The Westminster Society of the First Presbyterian Church will hold a general meeting on Tuesday at 6 30 PM with a covered dish supper. Attendees are asked to bring table service and the church nursery will be available for preschool children.
The Methodist Youth Fellowship League of Union Chapel Methodist Church will host its monthly party at Union Chapel on Wednesday evening March 23 at 7 30 p m. All young people in the community are invited.
The American Legion Auxiliary hosted Legionnaires at the 30th anniversary dinner at the American Legion Home. Tables featured a tiered birthday cake, blue and gold decor, and birthday candles lit by Little Miss Sherry Lynn Apgar. The event included brief talks by Roy Holder and Mrs. Henry Rockenmeyer, a program by Eloise Stelle Apgar, and musical and dramatic readings by attendees.
Fifty men of the First Presbyterian Church became charter members of the Presbyterian Men's Club at a meeting last evening that began with a church supper. Ed Curtis chaired. Lynn O Welge led singing. J R Thomas sang with Raymond Harper at the piano. Dr. Robert B Guthrie gave the address. A constitution was adopted and officers elected: Harold Johnson president, Ed Curtis first vice president, Kenneth Setzekorn second vice president, Howard Paisley secretary-treasurer. A Plan to have suppers by the men was discussed. monthly meetings to be held except July and August.

Police report a burglary at Parker Pen Company in Jamesville Wisconsin where about 20000 pens and pencils were stolen. Two men entered by blasting a rear door around 9 25 pm bound the watchman Jim Broderick then fled in a car or truck with the loot worth undetermined pending assessment.
Chicago March 21 final terms on a 640 million dollar yearly wage boost end an 11 month railroads and 16 nonoperating unions dispute. The plan extends the 40 hour week to railroads for the first time affecting about 1.0 million workers with a retroactive seven cent raise to Oct 1 and a 40 hour standard starting Sept 1. Guardsmasters remain on six days with 10 cent hourly increase. Overtime beyond eight hours daily or 40 weekly pays at time and a half. Saturdays and Sundays become work days with options to stagger weeks to avoid overtime. Straight time wage rises from 1.18 to 1.46 per hour.

Mt Vernon honored its 1949 state basketball champions with a school ceremony in the gym. Speakers credited Coach Stables and the team for outstanding teamwork and sportsmanship. The event featured remarks from former stars, civic leaders, and newspapers expressing pride in the Rams.
Jefferson county 4 H members meet at Linus Kiefer farm west of Belle Rive on Thursday March eighth at 2 p m for a windbreak tree planting demonstration. Helen Garrison says all members and parents are invited. W B Bulkley will direct the ceremony and give planting instructions. John Tuefer’s family hosts part of the event. Trees for those who completed plans will be provided and other members will learn how to start their own windbreak or forest. A variety of trees will be available this spring.
Miss LaVerne Denton, former Mt Vernon township high school commercial subjects teacher, died Saturday afternoon at Hillsboro MN hospital. Funeral services were held at Bass Funeral Home in Hillsboro this afternoon.
