Melvin Dana Morse 70 of Ashley died at 12 45 p m Tuesday after an apparent heart attack while fighting a grass fire at his home. He was retired general manager and superintendent of the Hollywood and a Candy Company of Ashley. Cremation will follow a 2 00 p m Friday service at Kringer Funeral Home Ashley with Rev John Nall officiating. He lies in state after 2 30 p m today at the same church. Morse born July 22 1898 in Grafton NC was married July 16 1921 in Lakeside Ohio to Dorothy Wright who survives. Survivors include his mother Erma Rice of Ashley a son Andrew G Morse stationed in Thailand a daughter Mrs Jo Ann Elizabeth of Lakeside Ohio and five grandchildren. He was a World War II veteran and member of the Lions Club Ashley and American Legion Nashville.

A late Wednesday blaze four miles northeast of Mt. Vernon totally destroyed a rented house and nearby barn. Firemen said both buildings and their contents were burned. The house stood north of Richview Road and was owned by Ruby Hrovatin, who lives on Richview Road.
