Fire at E St Louis nursing home forces evacuations

Sixty nine elderly patients at Doctor's Convalescent Center in the Broadview Hotel building escaped unharmed after a basement fire damaged the center Sunday night. Fire held to about 30 minutes before containment. An unidentified maintenance man died from smoke. No damage estimate yet.

Accused Spy Taken To Topeka For Arraignment

Leavenworth Kan AP A former nuclear weapons maintenance specialist was released from the disciplinary barracks and escorted to Topeka for arraignment on a charge of passing classified information to the Soviet Union. George John Gessner 25 formerly of Homestead Pa completed 10 months of a year's storm for desertion from the Army walked out of the barracks guarded by FBI agents. He wore a prison made civilian suit and kept his hands over his face as he departed by car. He was placed under protective custody pending arraignment before U S District Court Judge Arthur J Stanley Jr. The complaint alleges he communicated restricted data to a Soviet representative in Mexico City while stationed at Fort Bliss Texas.
