Helen Hawkins of Texico visited Monday. Mrs Cora Presley of Dalflgren was a Mt Vernon business visitor yesterday. Mrs R L Beal returned home from Barnes hospital St Louis greatly improved after four weeks as patient. Mrs Virgil Leslie and son Howard of McLeansboro were Mt Vernon visitors. Mrs Nona Dawson and Miss Rozan Holt visiting friends in Beardstown. Mrs Stella Allison of Fairfield visiting her brother M T Mabry. H C Miler of Benton spent yesterday in Mt Vernon. Mrs Edna Ledford of Fairfield was a Mt Vernon business visitor today. Mr and Mrs R E Carpenter and son Kent returned to Evansville Ind after visiting Mr Carpenter's parents. Loren Swisher of Mulkeytown was a business visitor here Monday. Mr and Mrs Wendell Kiefer of Belle Rive were Mt Vernon visitors today. Gaylord Wells of Nason spent Monday in this city. Mrs Maxine Woodruff spent today in Springfield attending the legislature. Earl Wright of West Frankfort was a Mt Vernon visitor Monday. Shirley Ann Wheeler spent yesterday in St Louis. Mrs Otto H Brown and son left this afternoon for Arkansas to visit Mr and Mrs Clyde Steele for a few days. Mrs Loren Williams of Ewing was a visitor today. Twin daughters were born to Mr and Mrs Burrell Scott of Fairfield Road at Good Samaritan Hospital this morning weighing six pounds one ounce each. John Rodney and Robert Allen were named for two newborn sons at Good Samaritan. Michael Patrick and a seven pound fifteen ounce daughter named for Mr and Mrs William Harwood Jones and Mr and Mrs Warl Licks at Jefferson Memorial Hospital respectively.

Donations Pour Into Red Cross Drive in Jefferson County

Reports from Jefferson county Red Cross drive show receipts reaching 12 975 15 toward a 12 000 goal. Campaign chairman Paul L Partridge notes 14th in state and praises volunteers across divisions including Special and Advance Gifts Harold Watson Equipment, Rural towns and clubs, doctors and dentists, and residential groups. Death of W H Flanigan at 91 in Mt Vernon area

W H Flanigan aged 91 died at 3 40 a m today at his son’s home northwest of Mt Vernon. Funeral 3 pm Thursday at New Hope Webb church with Rev Bird Green officiating. Burial in Old Shiloh cemetery. Osborn Funeral Home Dix handling arrangements. Survived by two sons Grover and Hershel Flanigan of Mt Vernon, daughter Hattie Sorenson of Centralia, three brothers, one sister, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Born October 25 1857 in Dix to John and Caroline Flanigan. Married Nancy Ellen Modglin January 5 1888. Continuous church member since youth.

Illinois Brokerage Celebrates 20th Founding Anniversary

The Illinois Brokerage chains in Mt Vernon and southern Illinois mark twenty years since founder Nathan Greenberg established the business. Founders Day will accompany the anniversary as Lester Brandt notes the company now runs 17 super units in the region and plans more this year. Johnny Greenberg, founder’s son, serves as president while Jack Bennett manages the Mt Vernon store which recently rebuilt its building and added a basement floor with all new fixtures.

Widow of Mt. Vernon Pastor Dies

Mrs. Alice Morris of Ashley, widow of the late Rev. W. B. Morris former pastor of Mt. Vernon First Baptist, died Sunday at St. Mary’s Hospital Centralia. Funeral Wednesday at 2 p m at Ashley Methodist Church with Rev. Andrew Caraker officiating, burial in Ashley cemetery. She is survived by two grandchildren, a daughter predeceased her.
