Traffic Court Twice A Week Mt Vernon Sessions

Mt Vernon traffic court will meet at the courthouse every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. and 1 30 p.m. Judge Alvin Lacy Williams announced the plan to improve efficiency. Mt. Vernon merchants posted record December retail sales totaling $3,570,400. City Clerk Paul Hayes received first totals from Illinois indicating a check for 17,852.22 dollars for the half cent sales tax collected in December. Casey Jones 100th Birthday Remembered in Song Legend

On the 100th anniversary of John Luther Jones born March 14 1864 in Jordan Kentucky the folk hero Casey Jones is remembered for piloting Illinois Central Locomotive No 382 the Cannonball Express on April 30 1900. He died when the train crashed near Vaughn Mississippi but his quick actions saved passengers as he ordered the fireman to jump and slowed the runaway train. Burial was in Jackson Tennessee where a tradition still salutes Whistling Casey as locomotives pass the cemetery.
