Word has been received of the death of Carter H. Wood about age 60, in Pasadena California last night. Wood resided at 412 South Los Robles in Pasadena and was a former resident of Woodlawn.
Louis M Simson of 711 North Street died at 1:00 PM at Linwood Nursing Home in Benton aged 87 years, one month and 21 days. The body will be shipped to Buffalo New York for funeral services and burial. He is survived by one daughter Dorothy Simson of Mt Vernon, three brothers and four sisters.
Two Illinois men, Robert Ramsey Brock of Du Quoin and Albert W. Ransom of Cairo, along with Ralph Lowery Porter of Nashville, Tennessee, were indicted for a get-rich-quick scam. They allegedly offered to sell eight 1000-dollar bills for 5000 dollars, gave fake money to victim Fred John Engle, who paid 5000 dollars, and an arraignment was set for Monday with all three free on bond.
Mr and Mrs Gale Hawkins Ashley Road welcomed a son at 5 48 yesterday in Jefferson Memorial Hospital weighing eight pounds six and a quarter ounces. Mr and Mrs Bob Mathis of Indianapolis welcomed a son named Mark Lee born March 8 in St Francis Hospital. Grandparents are Henry Tucker Elmer Bolerjack and Claude Hoots. Great grandparents Claude Hoots and family. Mr and Mrs Neal H Modert Dixon Illinois born a son on March 11 weighing seven pounds three ounces.

HOLLYWOOD A fair day's wage for movie bit players has been set at $80 by the Screen Actors Guild and the Assn. of Motion Picture Producers. The four year agreement raises the day player minimum from $70 to $80 immediately and from $80 to $90 on Feb 1 1958. The weekly freelance minimum climbs from $250 to $285 now and to $300 in two years. Less than 1 per cent of US crop land is devoted to growing tobacco.
J Marvin Powers of Security Bank Mt Vernon was elected secretary treasurer of Group 10 of the Illinois Bankers Association at Carbondale. John H Hutchison of Bank of Herrin became president and Hugh Hilboldt of Caire s First Bank and Trust Company was named vice president. About 350 bankers attended the meeting at the Carbondale Elks Club with an afternoon session and dinner.

A new Boy Scout troop, Troop 102, was organized in Mt. Vernon by district organizer Allistin Easton. Chartered by the Kaskaskia Council to Wesley Methodist Church, it will meet Tuesdays at 7:00 PM in the church basement under Scoutmaster Cantway Wolbert.

A Tuesday night meeting in Siarietta to tighten the borough curfew ordinance was postponed as the Borough Council could not locate the needed ordinance text. Residents awaited a new date and guidance on enforcement.
Mrs Phallis Valentino testified in Chicago that her husband Peter Valentino beat her 1,153 times over 12 years. A judge granted a restraining order, ordered Valentino from the home, and set support at 40 dollars weekly for Mrs Valentino and their two daughters.

Ted Weems and his orchestra will perform for a benefit dance at the Mt Vernon Armory on Tuesday night April 10. Dances support a fire department fund for purchasing uniforms. Dancing runs from 9:00 p m to 1:00 a m with Bonnie Ann Shaw Ted Stanford Dave Bedal and the Ted Weems Trio featured.
