Mr and Mrs Luther Burgess of West Plains Mo return home after a week visiting uncles aunts and friends in Mt Vernon. Many locals and visitors are named including Richards Starkey Sullivan Atchison and others with travels to St Louis Decatur Carmi and Bellevue. The condition of Fannie Wielt at Barnes Hospital improves slowly and several residents are noted on various visits and trips.

Nice named Peers store manager in Mt Vernon

Paul Nice formerly of Lansing Michigan is appointed manager of the Peers store in Mt Vernon and has assumed duties. The Olney native served nine years at Sears Roebuck as a department manager and spent three years in the Navy during the war. His wife Virginia and children Judith Ann and Danny Paul have moved to 2801 Mannen. Blanche Dale is named manager of the store's ready to wear department, a former Mt Vernon resident who spent 15 years with Chicago specialty shops.

Man Sentenced To Prison Here For Burglary

William Warren, 36, a south Tenth street used clothing dealer, was sentenced to one to ten years in the penitentiary by Judge Charles T. Randolph in circuit court. He had pleaded guilty to burglary connected to the C. G. Lang store burglary at Bonnie. Authorities say articles stolen from Belleville autos have been recovered since his arrest.

Former Resident Dies Yesterday in Hettick Ill

G W Owens aged 48 a former resident of Mr Vernon died at his home in Hettick Ill yesterday after a paralytic stroke Friends say funeral services will be at Craig Funeral Home Centralia at 2 30 p m Wednesday Owens worked for Viking Freight Line for years and was manager in Centralia for 15 years He moved to Hettick Ill late in 1949.

Free Chest X Rays During Jefferson County Tour

Six thousand three hundred two residents of Mt Vernon and Jefferson County received free chest X rays in a county wide survey by the state mobile unit. The survey, run over more than a month, ended March 31. The program was funded by the Christmas seal fund as part of tuberculosis control. Over 1,200 skin tests were given at four high schools. positive reactors were X rayed. Those with suspicious shadows will receive full size X rays and potential follow up. The TB association praised public cooperation and noted help from women clerks and the local power company.

Absentee Voting Begins in Jefferson County Primary

Eight votes have been cast by absentee ballot in Jefferson County. Eight residents voted yesterday in the County Clerk Roy H. Holt’s office as absentee ballots opened. Six more absentee ballots have been mailed to Mt Vernon residents temporarily away. A special voting booth operates in the clerk’s office for absentee voters.
