Leota Webber Dies at 78 in Champaign Funeral

Leota Leach Webber 78, widow of George Webber, died Saturday. She lived with daughter Helen Ricketts in Memphis and was sister to Lydia Pigg and Louis Leach, with half sisters Louella Pigg of Mt Vernon and Maude Gardner of Springfield. Funeral set for Tuesday in Champaign. Born in Jefferson County, she left 47 years ago.

Wealthy Cop Kills Burglar in St Louis

In St Louis on March 14 detective Elliott Lambert of the affluent Lambert pharmacal family shot and killed a burglar identified as William A. Baldwin, 22, after Baldwin surprised a tavern burglary with another officer. Lambert, 22, fired four times after a warning to halt was ignored.

Pioneer Mine Operator Dies

Robert Dick, an 85 year old pioneer southern Illinois coal operator, died in a hospital yesterday. He supervised sinking three mines in the region including Bobby Dick near Herrin. Services will be Wednesday at Sunfield nearby.

Cruelty Charged In Divorce Suit

June Marvelyn Owens filed for divorce against Charles Herbert Owens in circuit court on cruelty grounds. She seeks custody of a minor child and alimony. The couple wed June 1 1946 and separated September 19 1948, with County Judge Frank H. Walker representing the plaintiff.

Child Hurt After Falling From Moving Car

Four year old Nancy Lee Hughes of RFD 1 suffered bruises yesterday afternoon when she fell from a moving auto on state route 37 about two miles south of Pit Vernon. She was in the rear seat with sisters while her father and driver Raymond Edmison sat in front. The door opened and she tumbled out. She was reported to be getting along fine at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital.

Junior Red Cross council members from each school met in the Court House Supervisors Room on Saturday March 12 at 1 30 pm Officers elected were David Albright president Sue Ann Drennan vice president and Betty Dodd secretary. S. C. Huston Dies at 73 in Mt. Vernon

S. C. Huston 73 of Mt. Vernon died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday at his home near East Salem church. He was born November 28, 1875, and rode as a farmer. Survived by wife Effie A. Owens and five sons Glenn Emery Lester Fred and Russell all of Mt. Vernon, three daughters Lula Ardella Gwendolyn, three brothers Garfield L. G. Barney Huston, one sister Fannie Smith, 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral Wednesday 3:00 p.m. at East Salem church with Rev. Cyrus Maulding and Rev. Tomorrow Last Income Tax Day Headlines Rush for Returns

Washington March 14 Tomorrow midnight is the deadline to file 1948 income tax returns and penalties await delays. Revenue bureau officials say a heavy share of the 59,000,000 obligated have filed under prospect of refunds, but many remain to do so. Any citizen with income over 600 dollars in 1948 must file on time or face penalties up to 25 percent of the tax for delay. A penalty also attaches to late filing of an estimate declaration. It is five percent of each quarterly installment plus one percent for each month or part of a month during which the installment remains unpaid.

Man Dies After Fall Down Stairs in Edwardsville

Timothy Ferrell aged 46 died after falling down stairs at his niece’s Edwardsville home on Saturday night. He suffered a fractured skull and broken neck and had recently moved from Carbondale Illinois to the area.

Marjorie Marlow 41, a former Mt. Vernon resident, died Saturday at St. Anthony Hospital Rock Island. The body will arrive in Mt. Vernon for funeral services at Myers Chapel Wednesday at 1 30 p m with Rev Cyrus Maulding officiating. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Survived by husband Owen Marlow, parents Newton and Ethel Mulvaney, Rock Island, a brother John R. Mulvaney, Mt. Vernon sister Mrs Henry Schramm, Mt. Vernon. She was born August 12 1907 in Mt.
