Cecil Fitzjerrells of Pomona California died at his home March 11. He was a longtime barber in the Mt Vernon area. Burial followed a Todd Memorial Chapel service in Pomona. Born February 16, 1904 near Bonnie in Spring Garden township, he was the son of William J. and Lizzie Alice Fitzjerrells. He leaves five sons Virgil and Jerry of Claremont, Robert of Maplewood Minnesota, Tommy of Denver, and Jay of Las Vegas. a sister Grace Blanton of Mt. Vernon. two brothers Kern of Bonnie and Raymond of Mt. Vernon. plus nieces and nephews.
About 60 workers from 14 teams at 54 county businesses gathered at Pete's Place for an orientation session ahead of Monday's Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce membership drive. 400 invitations will be distributed. Dean Jenard was arrested in White County on a charge of failing to pay $3.65 for gasoline at Wilkey's Cafe in Belle Rive on March 5. He posted a $50 cash bond and was released from custody.
City police investigated complaints about fundraising by two religious groups in Mt Vernon. Unification Church solicitors were detained and released with no charges after inquiries at the police station, while Hare Krishna representatives faced a deadline from police to cease solicitation at Park Plaza Shopping Center. The groups are not affiliated and appeared separately in the same week.
A 35-year-old Vernon man was jailed Thursday evening on a weapons charge after an incident at the My-O-My Tavern on South 10th Street at Perkins Avenue. Police said two patrons argued and one threatened to beat the other. the latter returned with a loaded 22 cal rifle. Officers stopped the dispute, disarmed him, and he was placed in county jail awaiting formal charges.
In Redding California a low yield explosive device was found under the Hearst family Wintoon estate near Shasta County and deactivated. A San Francisco news outlet quoting a NWLF representative claimed responsibility for the planned explosion at the Hearst Castle Estate.
