Local residents and visitors populate Mt. Vernon area scenes during spring vacation. Families travel to St Louis, Peoria, Ames, and Jacksonville while others attend meetings in Newark and Peoria. Several residents report visits to kin in Kentucky Illinois and Missouri as well as hospital stays and improving health.

Funeral services for Mrs Mary E Borah Fenton will be held at 2:00 p m Sunday at the Christian church in Sims. She died Wednesday at St Marys Hospital in Centralia after a Sims life. Burial will be in Pin Oak cemetery. Surviving: Ed Borah of Lander Wyoming two daughters Dora Henderson of Sims Nell Tibbs of Cottage Hill Ill a half sister Nettie Turner of Mt Vernon seventeen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Mt. Vernon Rams defeated Centralia Orphans 58 to 29 in a controlled final. Lee and King led early as Mt. Vernon opened 18-3, while Centralia relied on long shots and fast breaks. Nickalous fouled out. Riley and Mays subbed in as Mt. Vernon widened to 56-27 before a slow finish.
Nine year old Bobby Reynolds and his seven year old brother Gene described three men in red pants black coats and checkered shirts who entered the rural Kansas school before class. The boys said the burglars carried two shotguns a rifle and a pistol and fled after shouting Scram you rats. An all day search by deputies state patrols and police found only mud on desks and broken phonograph records. Rumors of holdups and a killing spread before investigators concluded the incident likely stemmed from boyish imagination.
Associated Press reports Cal Wigginton, 83, preserves a family weather diary begun in 1834 by his great grandmother. The almanacs and diaries, kept by descendants, record daily weather notes spanning nearly two centuries at Lincoln NL.

His wife Isabel 39 gave birth to a son named William Patrick this week The baby has two half brothers aged 60 and 57 from Dr Lawson first marriage He is oldest living member of the University of California faculty and is building a new home
Mr and Mrs Henry Bartholomucci route 1 Vernon welcomed a son Friday afternoon at Good Samaritan Hospital weighing eight pounds. Mr and Mrs Donald E Walker of Salem Road welcomed a seven pound two ounce daughter at Good Samaritan Hospital this morning. Also noted is a brief historical line about William IV of England and a factual aside on woodpeckers and tree health.
Rebekah Lodge No. 296 met March 10 in the I F Hall with twelve candidates initiated. The Young Homemakers Home Bureau met at Mrs. Obbie Atkinson’s home with 12 members and one guest, Mrs. Evelyn Stitch, as lessons on Top of the Stove Cookery and Picture Hanging were given. Glove making is planned for March 17 at 1:30 a.m. at Mrs. Clifford Johnson’s home. Summersville Unit will meet March 15 at 1:30 p.m. at Mrs. Hallie Shehorn’s home with the major lesson by the home adviser and green attire for St Patrick’s Day.
The Woodlawn Home Bureau Unit met Wednesday evening at Woodlawn Christian church with Ann Endicott, Louise Smith, Thelma Kownacki and Wilma Dobbs hosting. Twenty five members and six guests attended. Mrs Nell Stonemetz led on Top of the Stove Cookery and Mrs Carl Gassoon Picture Hanging. Joe Barefield and wife to celebrate 43rd anniversary Sunday at Opdyke home with eight children, eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren.
In Jefferson County the Red Cross drive is expected to exceed its goal next Monday as campaign chairman Paul L. Partridge cites 11 636 dollars raised by Friday. The committee led by Harold G. Watson reports 5 434 dollars in total receipts with special gifts making up nearly half. Local donors include Central Mine Supply 100 Rex Cafe 25 Benoist Brothers 50 Shell Oil 25 Sears Roebuck 40 Mt Vernon Electric Supply 50 Merchants Supply 50 Porter and Bond 25 Moose Lodge 50 and Virgil T Bailey 100.
Robert Edlich a 17 year old Mt Vernon High School student suffered a l head wound after colliding with a truck at Broadway and Tenth during the public square celebration of the sectional basketball win. He received emergency care at Good Samaritan Hospital and was released.
In Orange New Jersey at the Orthopedic Hospital a birthday party for eight year old Carol Ann Wenzel featured a remarkable gift. Joe Lipani age twelve donated bone from his amputated leg to graft three five inch strips to Carol Ann's spine. Doctors say the procedure could restore walking ability after years of infantile paralysis. Carol Ann is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Wenzel of West New York. Joe is the son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Lipani of Passaic.
The Steamboat Lee remains the speed king of the Mississippi after a record attempt by the towboat Harry S. Truman failed to beat the historic New Orleans to St. Louis mark. The Truman, with 1100 tons of cargo, couldn’t reach Eads bridge before 12:15 p.m., missing the 11:14 a.m. record by river conditions north of Cairo. The Lee completed the voyage in 3 days 18 hours 14 minutes, aided by its steam propulsion, while the distance was shortened to 1155 miles by channel straightening. Popular legend about the Lee’s fate after the run is clarified as the vessel burned three years later.
Attention of all members of the Jefferson County Memorial Hospital association is called to day to the annual meeting of the association which will be held at the hospital building 909 Shawnee street at 730 p m Monday March 14. The call was made over the signature of Lewis Brake association president who expressed the hope that a large number of members of the association will be present to conduct the business of the organization. A report of activities of the hospital during the 1948 calendar year will be heard and plans for 1949 will be discussed. Membership in the association is held by all those who contribute annual dues of 5 or more and life membership is owned by those who have subscribed 100 or more.
Nanking March 12 Gen Ho Ying-Chin was sworn in as premier while peace talks with the Communists await the cabinet. Acting President Li Tsung-jen’s selection to replace Sun Fo won approval from the legislative yuan by a 209 to 30 vote.
The coal labor dispute centers on a walkout led by Lewis opposing Boyd's nomination and a modified Wagner Act. Industry figures condemn the move as political, while miners warn of safety-based stoppages. Estimates expect about 20 million tons of bituminous coal and 1.4 million tons of Pennsylvania hard coal to be lost in the fortnight.

Four coal mines at Du Quoin Illinois reported full crews after a United Mine Workers call for a two week stoppage began Monday. Although Saturdays are normally off at United Electric Peabody Majestic Pyramid Coal and Union Colliery, officials ordered an extra day of work after the stoppage notice.
