Former Resident Killed in Accident

Vernon Hollis aged 33 was instantly killed in a motorcycle crash in Alton Illinois on Tuesday. Born and raised in Mt Vernon he attended Field school. Funeral services are set for Sunday at Knights Prairie church seven miles southwest of McLeansboro. He was a nephew of Bruce and Walter Smith of Mt Vernon. Surviving are his wife two sons and his mother Mrs Edith Trinkle of Flora. His father and a brother preceded him in death.

Blood Drive Urgent as Red Cross Seeks Donors

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Mt Vernon on Friday March 25 to collect donations for Jefferson County citizens. Officials say new donors are badly needed for the March visit. To donate, call Red Cross office at 2083.4 A recruitment committee will meet at the Red Cross office next Tuesday March 15 at 7 20 p m chairwoman Mrs Doris Fisher announced.

50th Anniversary of Marital Union in 1899 Home

Kiwanis Club Holds Meeting Highlights and Announcements

Kiwanis club held its regular meeting last night with President Merle Henderson reading the minutes from the prior board session. Lawrence Collins announced an upcoming election on the school building program and Amos Smith named Kiwanian of the week. Three birthdays were announced Reid Starkey Cliff Fore and Glen Hutchison. Dr J R Ansley led the program presenting a film Infantile Paralysis Finds a Cure produced by Dr E R Dunn of Oklahoma City with the National Chiropractic Association. He noted chiropractic practice is about 54 years old with 20 000 chiropractors serving 30 million patients yearly. Guests were L A Dykema and Dr Wm Dillard.

Mount Vernon Car Manufacturing Co notes gambling remains a monopoly in Mt. Vernon as gamblers try to expand into Franklin County to the south but face strong resistance from Democratic State's Attorney J. Max Mitchell. With Mitchell succeeded by Democrat Joseph Hickman of Benton, they have not found footing there.
