Reservation Deadline Near Clergy-Business Open House

Representatives from 17 Jefferson County churches booked the 12th annual clergy business open house in Mt Vernon on March 22. Reservations close March 17. The event is hosted by the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce with the Jefferson County Ministerial Association and the Mt Vernon Rotary Club. The program begins at 9 30 a.m. with coffee at Trinity Episcopal Church, followed by a 10 30 a.m. tour of the Rend Lake Inter City Water System and a noon luncheon at the Rama da Inn hosted by the Rotary Club. Human relations concerns note low morning attendance by business representatives. Clergymen will be guests of Stan Koziara.

Blind man loses wife in Chicago Heights fire

A 72-year-old blind man is missing after a blaze in their apartment building. His wife, guiding him to safety, slipped from her grip in the smoke. Two others were injured and three nearby buildings were damaged. The fire’s cause is undetermined.

ILCG to Abandon 70 Mile Bloomington to Kankakee Line

Illinois Central Gulf Railroad plans to abandon a 70 mile track from Bloomington to Kankakee County within two years. The route runs northeast from Bloomington through Herschel and 13 small towns with about a dozen grain elevators. Chief Engineer Lee Fox cited insufficient traffic and said ICC permission will be sought. Last week the line’s hopper car weight limit was cut by 20 percent due to poor track conditions.

Hike Price Support Loans Suggested by NFU Convention

The National Farmers Union urged immediate action through executive order and Congress to boost 1977 crop price support loans to 90 percent of parity and set target prices at 100 percent of parity. Delegates also called for negotiations to form international commodity agreements with minimum and maximum pricing.

Warnke Confirmed by Senate in SALT Negotiator Vote
