Harris Says Illinois Phone Rates Too High
Democratic presidential hopeful Fred Harris urged the Illinois Commerce Commission to roll back a 70 million dollar increase granted to Illinois Bell Telephone Co. He argued Illinois residents pay higher rates than Californians and criticized the pay call and directory assistance charges. Harris also called for elimination of the federal oil depletion allowance, saying his views have evolved from earlier positions. He cited unions backing his Illinois campaign and contrasted Bell’s claimed profitability with its 8.5 percent allowed return.

Hearst Trial Proceedings Highlight Defense and Prosecution Clash
The courtroom scene featured Fort urging avoidance of a public trial for Patricia Hearst to spare her and family distress. Bailey accused him of lying as Judge Carter admonished both sides to lower voices. Fort defended not being Hearst's psychiatrist and noted hours spent with Hearst, including time in a closet she claimed as a holding space. Browning pressed on the April 1974 bank robbery while Bailey objected, the judge deferring that ruling to Monday. Fort also stated Hearst was not mentally ill on the bank robbery day.
