Mr and Mrs Leon Chizk welcomed a daughter Rose mary Veeora born March 1 at sister’s home on Richview road weighing 8 pounds. H V Seneder and Trulla Hassakis have a daughter Victoria Patrice born Feb 24 in Manteca California weighing 6 pounds 14 2 ounces. Billie Rex Riley welcomed Rebecca Ann at Good Samaritan hospital yesterday. Edwin Wilbert Karcher and wife have son Roger Allan born at 6 31 p m yesterday at Good Samaritan hospital. Wayne Melvin Carroll and wife gave birth to a son at 5 47 this morning at Good Samaritan hospital. William Byrne and wife have a son born yesterday at 10 p m at Jefferson Memorial hospital weighing 7 pounds 11 ounces. John Russell Orrick and wife welcomed Robert Russell born at Jefferson Memorial hospital weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces.
In Salonika seven Communists were executed by firing squad after a military tribunal found them guilty of attempting to establish a new underground movement. The executions were reported from Athens via the Associated Press. An American woman is referenced in a separate excerpt discussing citizenship and marriage.

Four flocks of about 100 geese passed over Mt Vernon in V formation, seen morning and midday as a weather forecast drizzle loomed. Mrs. Richard Birkner reported the early northbound flocks near 7:00 am from Welkins Street. Another resident observed the geese heading south at about 11:15 am.
James Edward Brown a former Jefferson county resident died at his home in Decatur Saturday. He was the brother of Orville Brown of Mt. Vernon and son of the late Henry and Alice Brown. Funeral services were set for 3 00 p m today in Decatur with burial there.
John D. Rockefeller Jr. pledges 5 million dollars to the United Negro College Fund to start a building program at its 32 affiliated schools. The announcement came at a dinner for 60 business leaders and campaign chairmen from 16 cities, with Rockefeller serving as fund National Council chairman.
William Young Jr of 327 South Seventh Street was injured in a bicycle car crash at 5 00 pm yesterday. He suffered a head injury and an ankle injury when his bike struck a car driven by James Parsons of RFD 7 Mt Vernon. The accident occurred at Seventh and Casey streets.
Neighbors of Frank Barbee, killed in an auto accident, plan a Friday corn shucking at the Barbee farm five miles south of Keenes and three quarters of a mile east. About 45 acres of corn will be shucked. if rain, work shifts to Monday March 12. Women should bring a basket lunch.
Police Magistrate A M Dulaney set bond at 4000 for William H Dobbs 29 on a manslaughter charge from a weekend auto crash near Mt Vernon that killed two. Five members of a Missouri family were in critical condition at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital Verne Buhler 40 Neelyville Mo his wife Evelyn 37 and children Charles 6 months Floyd 14 Ruth 6.
A Liberator bomber from Langley Air Force Base crashed into Blue Ridge Mountain near Staunton Virginia killing two reservists Captain Donald H Belleville and Staff Sergeant James F Butler. The wreck occurred near Big North Mountain about 15 miles west of Staunton with the craft disintegrating into many pieces.
Twenty eight slot machines seized in Washington county taverns were burned at a dump the next day using old motor oil as fuel. Destruction was ordered by Judge J D Maxwell. In Marion county thirty one other slots seized were ordered destroyed by Judge James E McMackin Jr.
Mt. Vernon high school students under art instructor Alma Biagi created window displays for a Red Cross Drive. Posters were designed in class, then set up in downtown stores after school hours with student labor.
Colonel and Mrs. Raymond E. Rutherford announce the engagement of their daughter Julia Eien Rutherford to Robert F. Rumery of Omaha. Julia, a University of Omaha graduate and editor of the year book, is granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Rutherford. Rumery, also an Omaha graduate, is a past Theta Chi president and Omicron Delta Kappa member.
Amvet Auxiliary to Turner Boehm Post 4 met in the Amvet club room and introduced five new members Mrs Mildred Bodine Mrs Ruth Troutt Mrs Alvina Johnson Mrs Eunice Adams and Mrs Thelma Flanigan. The next visit to the Veterans Hospital at Marion is March 14 and the next meeting will be April 2. The Sackettes served refreshments.
The Men's Class and Dorcas Class of the Free Will Baptist church meet at 7:30 PM tonight at the church. Gladys Dodson hosts and members should bring mystery pals.
Beulah Kent of 602 South 24th street hosted the Mothers Club on Thursday March 1. Fay Hughey led the meeting with singing and prayer. Lois Culli read two pieces and sang with Dexter Kelley accompanying. Guests included Minnie Hefley Richard Dolan Alois Culli Lois Mae Culli and Dexter Kelley. Easter devotional followed with refreshments arranged by Clara Hopkins Pearl Ryder Hattie Mossberger and Louise Hugill.
The V F W Ladies Auxiliary will nominate and elect officers at a March 8 meeting at 7 30 p m in city hall.
The Carlyle Business and Professional Women's Club hosted District 10 clubs at a dinner in Carlyle First Methodist Church. District chair Dolly Kell presided. Nellie Sargent was named to the nominating committee. Kell reelected as chair. Gladys Goldsmith named alternate. Stella Summers spoke on the national B and P W organization. Alice Lacey discussed the Chicago state convention. A Carlyle girls chorus performed. Nashville club invited fall meeting. Evelyn Stitch will present a W S C S lesson on Christian Opportunities in the Moslem World March 7 at 2 p.m.

Smiley Burnette, leading cowboy movie comic, will appear on the Granada stage in Mt Vernon on Wednesday afternoon and night with three shows at 4 55, 7 10 and 9 30 p m He will sing from his 200 songs and his versatile skills include 52 instruments Burnette, born Summum Alabama, rose from Tuscola radio to film alongside Gene Autry and later worked with Roy Rogers in numerous Western pictures and public appearances.
Unconfirmed reports from Free Czechoslovakia exiles claim former Foreign Minister Vlado Clementis was slain while fleeing captors. They also allege President Klement Gottwald and Premier Antonin Zapotocki are under house arrest for opposing Soviet demands to dismantle heavy industry and send Czech workers to the USSR.
East St. Louis Fire Fighters Local 25 threaten action by tomorrow ahead of a city council meeting as they press for wage increases from 70 to 150 dollars monthly. No strike was declared, but past walkouts were averted.

Carl Kovacovich of RFD 1 Mr. Vernon died at 7 00 am at the Veterans Hospital in Marion Illinois. He was 51 years old and had been ill since January 13. Funeral Thursday at 3 30 pm at Myers officiating with burial in South Hickory Hill cemetery. He worked at Revere Copper and Brass Co Chicago and was a member of the Disabled War Veterans in Chicago. He was born February 19 1900 in Vienna Austria son of Steve and Anna Kovacovich. He married Mona Ellis and is survived by his wife mother three sisters and two children.
John W. Bailie about 50, of Paducah, an Illinois Central Railroad employee, was transported by ambulance from Mount Vernon to Illinois Central Hospital in Paducah yesterday after a chicken bone lodged in his throat. He was able to talk during the trip and had no breathing trouble.
President Truman met with Charles E. Wilson in Key West to discuss the labor walkout dispute. The United Labor Policy Committee had pulled its representatives from the Wage Stabilization Board and other defense bodies, while Truman called the issue a disagreement not a strike.
Hollywood announces the reopening of the Hollywood Canteen on July 4 with film personalities again entertaining servicemen for free. The Canteen had been closed since 1945 after buying a $225,000 nightclub last November led by president Bette Davis. In Granite City two Proffitt brothers report cars stolen during the night with no shared awareness until police were contacted.
