Romanian Choir to sing at First Methodist Saturday

The Cyprian Porumbescu Choir of Bucharest Romania will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the First Methodist Church in Mount Vernon as part of a three week United States tour. This concert, presented by the church and Rend Lake College Fine Arts, is free to the public.

May Deny Jobless Pay For Teachers During Summer

Samuel Carlisle Found Not Guilty Of Theft Charge

Samuel Carlisle, 42, was found not guilty in circuit court Tuesday of theft after the State failed to produce evidence and the complaining witness did not appear. Carlisle was charged by William Strickland with stealing a bottle of whiskey on December 29, 1974.

Oil Depletion Allowance Repeal Tied to Tax Cut Bill

The Senate Finance Committee agreed on a plan to complete action on a $21.3 billion tax-cut bill by March 21 without an oil depletion repeal, with hearings to begin Wednesday led by Treasury Secretary Simon and ending March 14 with Fed Chair Arthur Burns. Federal Authorities Take Woman In Forgery Case

Carolyn Goosby a 27 year old Mt Vernon area resident was arrested after attempting to cash a stolen Social Security check at First Bank Trust. She was released to federal authorities and will face charges in East St Louis Federal Court involving theft and forgery. The victim’s identity was not disclosed and police noted the check was stolen from a Mt Vernon resident.

Governor’s 1976 budget arms rise in all key areas

Governor Walker outlined a $5.9 billion direct payments plan and a 24 percent transportation increase to $2.5 billion, with higher education gaining 26 percent to $1.1 billion. Public aid up 8 percent, elementary and secondary education up 15 percent, mental health up 14 percent, and corrections 19 percent. He pledged no tax raise and warned of possible spending cuts if revenues fall short.

Mt Vernon’s water purchases from Rend Lake use a tiered rate: 30 cents per thousand gallons up to 1 million gallons, 15.4 cents for the next 29 million, 14.9 cents for the next 45 million, and 14.4 cents for over 75 million. Botch said the total 58.7 cents per thousand cannot be reduced, as maintenance and depreciation rise with age and other costs are fixed.
