The Kiwanis Club at Hotel Emmerson heard speaker Philip Newkirk review changes in the 1948 income tax act from 1944 to 1948. He noted tax peaks in 1944 and that 1948 brought major reductions including higher personal exemptions and income splitting for spouses. The talk covered community property savings and continued tax advantages after death, with Ken­neth Dycus attending and R. S. Doane honored as Kiwanian of the week. a short board meeting followed.

Two Boys Try To Wreck Train Near Dixon Illinois

State's Attorney Morey Pires said two 12 year old boys confessed to attempting to wreck a North Western Railroad passenger train near Dixon. They placed spikes and debris on east bound rails two miles west of town and hid in a quarry awaiting the diesel train from Omaha to Chicago. A railroad switch crew found the material about 30 minutes before train time and removed it. The boys were questioned by railroad special agent George Addington and released to their parents pending possible legal action.

The program blends difficult classics and well known pieces. Krans trained since age three and studied with James K Brooker of Bay City and Leo Podolsky of Chicago. She has appeared at Interlochen National Music Camp and earned top honors in Michigan solo festivals. Proceeds fund further training for Bay City youths with a Salzburg trip planned to attend the Mozart Music Festival. The Census Bureau reports 3.2 million unemployed in February 1949, up 550000 from January. Weather and non seasonal layoffs blamed. total joblessness rose 1.25 million in the first two months of 1949, highest since 1942 wartime peak.
