Carrie Olive Hagel age 74 of Fairfield died 8:20 a.m. Saturday at Fairfield Memorial Hospital born August 22 1900 in Wayne County daughter of James E and Martha King Ray first married to Tryte Gordon who died 1928 second marriage to Harold Hagel who died 1970 member of North Side Baptist Church and Olive Branch church burial in Olive Branch cemetery she is survived by three daughters Hester Hagel Mrs Harol deen Rogers and Mrs Wanda Jean Stoltz nine grandchildren eleven great grandchildren two sisters Grace Hatchcraft and Mamie Sugar she was preceded in death by son Herman Gordon who died 1933 at age nine.

A weekend incident left a brick lane hole in the 2000 block of Broadway. Police described an 18 to 20 inch opening with about a dozen bricks missing and others loose. Officers collected bricks and set them on the curb as the condition worsened. Broadway remains brick between 20th and 22nd Streets after decades of paving.
The Mt. Vernon City Council convenes at 7 30 p m for its first regular meeting of the month. On the agenda is an ordinance revision to establish enforceable fire lanes at shopping centers and hospitals. Also up are requests for 4000 for the Jaycees Christmas lighting program and approval of a six lot subdivision on Brownsville Road near Southgate Apartments by Vance Skinner.
A 15 year old bicyclist Allen Bohn was treated for minor facial injuries at Gooe Samaritan Hospital after a car forced his bicycle onto a curb near the intersection of 8th and North Streets Saturday afternoon. Police recorded the incident and the rider reported the strike occurred as he rode along the street.
Mt Vernon market quotes show soybeans at 4.60 wheat 3.15 and corn 2.40 at 10:00 am. Chicago notes list butter eggs and grain prices with No 2 hard winter wheat at 3.41 and No 2 soft red at 3.37. St Louis reports egg prices and ready to cook poultry, while National Stockyards notes hogs cattle and sheep receipts and varying price ranges. New York stock market opens higher with gains led by industrials as rates easing expectations buoy trading.
Five juveniles aged 8 to 15 are suspected burglars in a Woodlawn home break in over the past weekend. Mrs. Violet Claxon reported theft of four half dollars a tackle box a necklace and ice cream bars. No forced entry noted. Suspects to meet Sheriff Bill Hill at 5 p.m. Deputies credited with clearing the case. Dow Jones noon averages also reported with gains on Friday led by industrials and the overall market firm.
Two Centralia youths, Michael D. Allison and Randy A. Palmer, were fined $100 each, with $149 restitution, and placed on two years probation for stealing Exxon Oil Co metal gear box covers. A curfew was imposed. Deputy Glenn Tate found 12 damaged windows over the Waltonville high and grade schools after a weekend act. Four high school windows were broken, five at a garage on campus, and three at the grade school. Debris included cinders concrete blocks and soda bottles.
Mt Vernon Township High School placed third at the District High School Speech Contest held Saturday in Marion. The Mt Vernon team earned 12 points, behind Sparta with 28 and Waterloo with 22, while Benton and DuQuoin each had 11, Freeburg 6, Lesser 6, Centralia 6, and Murphysboro 5.
In Kankakee Illinois three Kingston children aged 3 8 and 10 died when a Sunday house fire swept through their home. William Kingston his wife and their son Mickey 11 escaped but the three younger children were trapped on a bedroom bed. Fire officials said the blaze began in a sofa in the living room and Mickey alerted the family before they were cut off from the children. The cause and origin of the $25 000 fire were not yet determined.

After a Mt. Vernon area blaze, investigators found a pile of wood and rags reportedly set afire. At 2 19 p m Saturday J F P D crews battled a grass fire at Warren Hyde's home six miles southwest on Route 148 burning about a half acre with no damage.
