Hole Emerges In 2000 Block Of Broadway

A weekend incident left a brick lane hole in the 2000 block of Broadway. Police described an 18 to 20 inch opening with about a dozen bricks missing and others loose. Officers collected bricks and set them on the curb as the condition worsened. Broadway remains brick between 20th and 22nd Streets after decades of paving.

City Council Meets Tonight at Mt. Vernon City Hall

The Mt. Vernon City Council convenes at 7 30 p m for its first regular meeting of the month. On the agenda is an ordinance revision to establish enforceable fire lanes at shopping centers and hospitals. Also up are requests for 4000 for the Jaycees Christmas lighting program and approval of a six lot subdivision on Brownsville Road near Southgate Apartments by Vance Skinner.

Biker Injured After Car Forcibly Moves Bicycle

A 15 year old bicyclist Allen Bohn was treated for minor facial injuries at Gooe Samaritan Hospital after a car forced his bicycle onto a curb near the intersection of 8th and North Streets Saturday afternoon. Police recorded the incident and the rider reported the strike occurred as he rode along the street.

Suspect Juveniles In Break In At Woodlawn Home

Five juveniles aged 8 to 15 are suspected burglars in a Woodlawn home break in over the past weekend. Mrs. Violet Claxon reported theft of four half dollars a tackle box a necklace and ice cream bars. No forced entry noted. Vandals Break Out A Dozen Windows At Waltonville Schools

Deputy Glenn Tate found 12 damaged windows over the Waltonville high and grade schools after a weekend act. Four high school windows were broken, five at a garage on campus, and three at the grade school. Debris included cinders concrete blocks and soda bottles.

Mt Vernon District Meet Finishes Third in Speech Contest

Mt Vernon Township High School placed third at the District High School Speech Contest held Saturday in Marion. The Mt Vernon team earned 12 points, behind Sparta with 28 and Waterloo with 22, while Benton and DuQuoin each had 11, Freeburg 6, Lesser 6, Centralia 6, and Murphysboro 5.

Three Children Die in Kankakee Fire

In Kankakee Illinois three Kingston children aged 3 8 and 10 died when a Sunday house fire swept through their home. William Kingston his wife and their son Mickey 11 escaped but the three younger children were trapped on a bedroom bed. Fire officials said the blaze began in a sofa in the living room and Mickey alerted the family before they were cut off from the children. The cause and origin of the $25 000 fire were not yet determined.
