Robert M. Shirley of Memphis Tennessee, a former Vernon resident, died at 4:00 a.m. Sunday in Memphis. Funeral services set for 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Holman Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau Missouri with burial there. Survivors include wife Eva and two sons Robert and Jimmy Shirley, both of Memphis. He formerly worked 20 years for Dixie Mills Co and owned Park Inn Restaurant.
Lettie Brown age 77 of Sesser died Saturday at Miners Hospital in Christopher. Funeral at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Apostolic church in Sesser with Rev. Paul Worley officiating and burial in Maple Hill cemetery. She was born Sept. 4, 1891 in Kentucky, widow of Nat Brown. survivors include three daughters Violet Kirkpatrick Ruby Span Geneva Lovelady, three sons Delbert Earl Terry, one sister Ada Bishop, one brother Homer Miller, 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Burial arrangements at Brayfield Funeral Home in Sesser are open to visitors after 2:00 p.m. today.
Maude Mae Pigg 76 of 400 Jordan died Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital. Services 3:00 PM Wednesday at Myers Chapel with Rev Roy Van Horn officiating. Burial Oakwood Cemetery. Calling after 5:00 PM Tuesday. Born October 2, 1892 in Mt Vernon to August and Martha Roeder. Survived by two daughters Veneta Hahn and Ficetta Edmison, three sons Charles A Pigg Edwin Pigg William A Pigg, 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Husband William E. Pigg died in 1967. Preceded by one son and two siblings.
Bruce Willeman 62 a retired Wayne City merchant died at 9 00 am Saturday from an apparent heart attack He was dead on arrival at Fairfield Memorial Hospital Funeral services were held at 2 00 pm today at Richardson Chapel in Wayne City Rev Charles Webb officiated and burial followed in Thomason cemetery in Wayne City He was born April 14 1906 in Wayne City son of H C Willeman and Phoebe Garrettson Willeman On August 11 1925 he married Glenn Borah who survives
John Lyle, 51, of Midlothian Alabama, a former Mt. Vernon resident and American Car official, died suddenly from a heart attack Saturday. Funeral is Tuesday at 1 30 p m in Midlothian. Survived by wife Ruby, a daughter and a son, three brothers Artie Mt Vernon Kenneth Midlothian Arthur Chicago, four sisters Edrie Mt Vernon Ethel Peoria Ruby Murphy West Frankfort Dorothy Pearson Imogene Wis, and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Mona Clark 67 of Mt. Vernon Route 6 died Sunday at Jefferson Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness. A longtime 4H leader and charter member of the Jefferson County Home Bureau she chaired the Jefferson County Health Improvement Association and held other community roles. Survived by husband Keith, daughter Imogene, son Norman, three grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral at Donoho Prairie Christian Church with burial at the church cemetery. Memorials to Jefferson County Memorial Hospital Building Fund.

Chester Lakey, 65, of Anderson, Indiana, a former Mount Vernon resident, died Sunday morning at St. John's Hospital in Anderson at 1 30 p m Tuesday. Funeral services were held at Brown and Butz Funeral Home in Anderson with burial there. Survived by his wife and one stepson, Robert L. Harris of San Diego.
Prices rose to 25 cents above prior levels with top bids at 19.75 to 20.00 for 200 to 220 lb meat hogs and 19.50 for 220 to 230 lb hogs. Sows brought 13.50 and 16.50 while boars sold at 10.00 and 11.00. After 12:30 p.m. prices shift to next day's basis.
Mt Vernon traders reported prices for wheat at 1.19, soybeans at 2.50, and corn at 1.13 per bushel in this morning’s market update.
Chicago Mercantile Exchange prices list butter and eggs with grade A whites at 39 cents per pound for 80 percent or better, mediums 36, standards 36, checks 27. Also notes scores for butter and cars with various grades and percentages.
AP reports Tuesday estimates for National Stockyards Illinois list for hogs cattle calves and sheep. Hogs 7 000 to 9 000 head with barrows and gilts 210 235 pounds at 20 75 to 21 00 and sows 300 400 pounds at 17 75 to 18 50. Cattle 4 000 head calves 100 with steers 950 1 200 pounds at 20 75 to 29 00. heifers 850 1 000 pounds 26 50 to 28 00. cows 18 00 to 20 50. vealers 32 00 to 43 00. slaughter calves 18 00 to 26 00. Sheep 600 head good lambs 26 00 to 30 50. ewes 8 00 to 10 00.
The AP dispatch lists consumer and wholesale egg grades with prices for sizes large medium small and standards. It includes Hens heavy and light weights and poultry categories with price ranges from 9 to 39 cents per unit and broilers/fryers at 27.75 to 28.75.
The New York Stock Exchange saw a slender gain held in active trading as utilities chemicals and many motors rose while rails declined with Penn Central down over a point. Among the top ten most active stocks six advanced three declined and one unchanged with Gulf Western Loew’s and Pittston among notable movers.
Flames swept the Evans Hotel in Vandalia early Monday, starting in a basement restaurant and spreading to upper floors of a five story brick building. Firefighters battled the blaze for more than three hours with no injuries reported.
A Mt Vernon man Percy Atkinson 43 was injured when a C E I train struck his van type truck at Main street crossing. He was treated and released at Good Samaritan Hospital. Four other accidents, including injuries to Gary Hustedde 16, and two-car collisions, caused over $100 in damage. Police charged Norlan Shell with DUI and license suspension after a parked car crash.
Two St Louis men, Royce G. Cooley 28 and Albert L. Casey 23, were nabbed by Mt Vernon police before daylight. Fairfield officers received a 4 30 a m call describing the car and said the pair were suspected of taking money from soda pop machines in Fairfield. Officers found 3134 95 in the car in a sack and bolt cutters. The men were held for Fairfield officers.
The Jefferson County Coon Hunters Association sponsors described the recent coon hunt as a success. Hunters came from nine states including New York Maryland Michigan Wisconsin and Tennessee as well as neighboring states to compete. A total of 380 dogs were entered in the event.
Mt. Vernon police report a parking meter outside Hotel Emmerson was broken into and emptied. Officers say the theft occurred despite patrols, with money and the container removed from the meter.
Mr and Mrs Michael Terry of 509 South 22nd welcomed a daughter born at 12 42 this morning March 3 in Good Samaritan Hospital. The infant weighed six pounds nine and a half ounces.

Picketing resumed today at Mt Vernon TB Sanitarium with four Local 1754 members reportedly fired for political reasons. About 100 marchers gathered around the courthouse Saturday, joined by six labor organizations including IUOE No 520, Hod Carriers No 1136, United Shoe Workers No 116A, Machinists No 1417, and affiliated locals from Anna to Jacksonville.
Huston Platt, 35, of Atlanta walked away after a wreck at a drag strip where 11 died and 48 were treated. Rick Lynch of Memphis estimated the crash car’s speed near 180 to 200 mph. The Yellow River track operated outside major sanctioning bodies. Jim Kaser urged stopping unregulated drag racing.

Police report a break in at the Jiffy Wash on South 24th Street near Casey Avenue. Thieves took $18 from the soda machine last night and left.
