Thunderstorms Spread Across Nation As Weather Forecast Plays Out

Thunderstorms covered a wide region with moderate to heavy activity from Western Texas to Southern Oklahoma and the lower Ohio valley. Isolated storms also hit Arkansas Kentucky Indiana Alabama and North Dakota with scattered showers on the Atlantic coast upper Mississippi valley and northern Great Lakes. Temperatures ranged from 48 to 97 across California and other areas. The forecast called for additional thundershowers in Kentucky Tennessee western Carolinas northern Alabama and Georgia with scattered activity in the Atlantic coast and northern Rockies while much of the nation remained mostly sunny.

Pornography Bill On Governor's Desk In Illinois

Illinois lawmakers sent to Gov. James R. Thompson a measure cracking down on pornography involving minors. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Michael Getty, creates felonies for creating or soliciting child images and for guardians who permit such use, carrying a maximum life sentence.

The Commerce Department reports May 1977 U S trade deficit at 1.2 billion dollars, the year's best monthly deficit but part of a five month total near 9.8 billion. Exports rose 4 percent to 10.4 billion while imports fell 8 percent to 11.6 billion led by declines in foreign oil and coffee.

Explosion Kills Two at Elk City Motel in Oklahoma

An early Sunday explosion in a garage at the Motor Inn Motel in Elk City Oklahoma killed Fita La Furia 52 and Sam La Furia 65 of Springfield and Benid Illinois and injured five others. Police said a gas buildup in the garage may have sparked the blast.

Brief Lawsuit Settled Over Transformer Failure

Southern Illinois Stone Co. and Central Illinois Public Service Co. reached an out of court settlement after a circuit court dismissal. The suit alleged negligence in selecting installing and maintaining a transformer that failed on June 3 1970 damaging motors and forcing a weeklong shutdown. The action sought about 40000 in damages.
