Death of George Champ at 78 in Centralia area

George G. Champ 78, of 716 North Street, died at 8 45 a m at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. A retired assistant superintendent at Western United Gas and Electric Co in Murphysboro he was a World War I veteran and a member of the American Legion and Farm Bureau. Funeral Thursday at 2 p m at Central Church of Christ with Floyd Stabler officiating. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. He leaves a brother, sister, and a niece and nephew.

12 Burglaries In 8 Months At East St. Louis Tavern

Andy Cermak reports his tavern near East St Louis has been burglarized 12 times in eight months. The first break in occurred last fall and the latest over the weekend. Insurance was canceled and no replacement policy could be obtained. He notes burglars often target gum and cigarettes, then liquor and beer from the ice box. A trap set by Cermak failed as the burglars went the wrong way.

Bank Robber Killed After Shootout In Downtown Bank

Inside the bank, Stanton reeled into the street shouting for help as Rakau, clutching a torn paper bag, strewn stolen money across the pavement. Detective First Sgt. Ed Burke said he shot Rakau twice in the chest with a .38 service revolver.

Olney Soldier Killed in Vietnam Mine Incident

In Rangoon thousands of Burmese attacked Chinese during protests over Mao Tse-tung badges and anti-Chinese demonstrations. Rescue Mission Truck Damaged By Fire At Mt Vernon

Firefighters responded to the Mt. Vernon Rescue Mission at 811 South 10th Street yesterday evening about 5 45 p m. The 1964 model truck at the rear of the building caught fire and its bed was extensively damaged by paper and cardboard fuel. By the time the blaze was out substantial damage remained.

Federal job to cut highway hazards in Illinois

A $53.7 million spot improvement plan jointly funded by the federal government and Illinois aims to remove high accident locations from the state highway system. In Hamilton County a narrow bridge on federal aid secondary route 892 near McLeansboro will be replaced at an estimated $6,000. Other Southern Illinois projects include realigning a dangerous curve on state route 37 near Salem at $41,000, adding flashing signals at a railroad crossing east of Enfield on route 834, and building a new two lane facility on route 13 from Carbondale to south of Carterville at $1,700,000. Federal Highway Administrator Lowell K. Bridwell notes the program seeks to reduce traffic deaths and injuries.
