A $65 934 judgment was entered for the plaintiff in a circuit court settlement Friday. The plaintiff was West Frankfort Soil Service Inc formerly Donald Orr Soil Service, and the defendant was C L Ponder. The suit sought payment of a $54 000 promissory note due September 1 1967 plus interest and attorney fees.
Mis. Ver non police report three vandalism cases Sunday. John Ancon RR 7 reported damage to his 12 foot wooden boat at Jay cee Lake, with parts sunk, damage likely within two weeks. Earl Krueger 1814 Pace Ave reported vulgar spray painting on his driveway while family was away. Sue Rainey 2100 College said a car stopped and the outside mirror was broken. she did not see the culprit.
King City Barracks No 102 will hold a regular meeting at 7 30 p m Tuesday June 24 at the Legion hall. All members urged to attend. A social hour with the Ladies Auxiliary will follow. Chicago market notes list grains with no. 2 hard wheat at 1.33 and no. 2 soft red at 1.29 per bushel. Corn values include no. 1 yellow at 1.31 and no. 2 yellow at 1.31. Oats and soybeans also shown with weights and prices, soybeans at 2.70 per bushel and soybean oil at 7.80.
Wall Street moved lower in active trading as worries about monetary restraint weighed on stocks. The Dow Jones average at noon fell 8.20 to 867.96, with the AP average down 2.5 and all of the 20 most active NYSE issues lower. Occidental Petroleum dropped 1 1/4 to 35 as trading continued amid broad declines.
A Spanish speaking man with a knife and bottle labeled explosives hijacked an 89 passenger Eastern Airlines DC8 from Newark to Miami, steering toward Cuba. His wife and 15 year old daughter joined him. aircraft diverted to Havana, later returned to Miami. Hijacker and family remained in Havana.
Turner Boehm Post No. 4 Amvets took the Governor's Award at the Illinois State Amvets Convention in Waukegan on June 21, the highest annual honor for AMVET Post and Auxiliary based on child welfare community efforts Americanism and hospital work. Charles Huntman is current post commander. Kenneth Shoemaker is elected commander for the next year and will be installed July 12.
A four member Arctic expedition faced aggressive polar bears as they crossed ice in temperatures reaching 45 below zero. They fired warning shots and killed bears that approached within 15 feet to protect sled dogs and the team. Dr Roy Koerner described tossing a boot to a bear which the animal tore apart. The crew, welcomed by family and dignitaries aboard the ship, called the journey a perilous, Everest like adventure and noted gathering valuable scientific data.
Police logged two burglaries and two thefts over the weekend. A Texaco station on Broadway seen intruders pry open a cigarette machine after entering through a window. A Holman Motors van lost two wide mirrors and a Sony TV may be linked to a separate theft. A Park Plaza lot incident saw a small TV stolen from a station wagon, while a residence on 20th Street reported a glass pane break in with missing company record books, later recovered.
A string of fatal crashes claims 31 lives across the region. Victims include James J. Rice 62 of Monticello who drove through Monticello Cemetery gates, Albert Ingram 44 of Joliet near a light pole on the Stevenson Expressway, Michael J Doody Jr 51 of Round Lake on the Tri State Tollway, Helen R Kolousek 52 of Parma Ohio in a two car crash in Chicago, Judith Kowalski 24 of Chicago in a car bus collision, Ramona Sue Waters 81 of Peoria and Evelyn Collison 52 of Keokuk Iowa in a two car crash on Illinois 96 near Nauvoo, Everett Snearly 52 and Ruth 53 of Paris and Floyd Thomas 21 of Lincoln in a Robinson area crash during a heavy rain, and Theresa Miller 2 mentioned among the list.
Students for a Democratic Society splits at its national convention with two rival slates. The Regular faction led by Mark Rudd elects Jeffrey Jones and William Ayres to top posts while the Progressive Labor faction, led by John Pennington, elects its own slate. Both factions declare themselves the real SDS and hold news conferences at separate sites.
Compton is appointed to the county board as ongoing efforts continue. A fire in a coal bunker was extinguished after significant work. An architect estimates 14,000 for a new gas heating unit plus 1,000 for removal of the old one. Committees led by Dickerson and Waite will decide on gas heat to curb coal soot damage to the 30 year old courthouse heating system. In Tremont, Mr. and Mrs. David Miller died from injuries after their car struck a light pole on wet pavement. Juanita Walz and Suzanne Kirby, both of Chicago, were killed when their car left the highway near Joliet.

MacKenzie Dale K. Reese Frank E Faulkner and others from Mt. Vernon Harrisburg Salem Guy Hill Shawneetown Carmi and Mcleansboro. The group joins top ranking MetLife staff from across the United States and Canada, as the Mt. Vernon office under MacKenzie’s supervision emphasizes strong sales and service records.

Sunday 2 00 p m a Salem Road 1100 block crash involved Calvin L Denny 44 of Roxana and Charles W Hancock 34 of Morton Hancock ticketed for following too closely with damage over 100 dollars per vehicle. 4 15 p m Sunday Jackie L McDaniel 21 of Newark Arkansas and Dwight E Shelton 18 of RR 1 Bonnie collided at 10th and Jordan streets Shelton charged with following too closely with damage over 100 dollars.

The local fire department reported a couch fire at 1001 S 12th Street the home of Glenwood Eaton. Firemen arrived at 10 06 a.m. and determined the blaze likely started from a cigarette.
