Several residents visited relatives in St Louis and other cities, including Barnes Hospital and Children’s Hospital patients. Second Lightning Bolt Kills Man at River Camp

In Riverview Fila on June 22 a second lightning strike near the Little Manatee river killed 67 year old Charles Sappal. The fatal bolt came one year after a prior strike knocked a bottle from his hand at the same fishing camp.

Pilson-Holland Nuptials Tie In Belle Rive Church

Miss Wilma Lorene Pilson daughter of Mrs Ruby Pilson and Ona Pilson wed Kenneth Ray Holland son of T G Holland Route 1 Belle Rive on Sunday at four in the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist church. Rev Paul Cravens officiated. Attendants were Cyrus Webb and his wife. The bride wore a white street length dress with pink carnation corsage. Attendants wore blue with white corsages. M L Comton was pianist. Mrs Holland is a Mt Vernon Township High School 1950 graduate now employed at Corps Department Store. Holland a 1949 Mt Vernon Township High School graduate works at Tom's Standard Service and is a minister at Sugar Camp Macedonia and a church near Dahlgren. They will reside at 422 South 24th Street Mount Vernon.

Engineers gather for Illinois Society session at Jackson County Club

Members and guests from southern Illinois including Jefferson County attended a Tuesday session of the Egyptian Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers at Jackson County Club near Murphysboro. Rex V. Woodward and Setzekorn were present from the area. Guy Fairfield, chief engineer of the Illinois State Department of Conservation, spoke on the small pond and lake program.

Wheat Crop Down In Washington County in Illinois

Nashville Ill June 22 Washington county high among Illinois counties in wheat output expects only 50 to 70 percent of a normal crop this season farm adviser Wilbur Smith said today He ascribed the crop to poor growing conditions including two severe ice storms The county had a 2 000 000 bushel crop last year.

The Rev. and Mrs. F. Murray Haworth and family relocate from Wood River UK to the Evangelical United Brethren parsonage at 245 South 16th Street. He led the First Evangelical United Brethren Church in Wood River for two years. The family includes Murray Jr a music student Esther a high school junior and Donald in sixth grade. The Haworths have ties to Carthage College Illinois Wesleyan University and active community roles with Girls 4-H and Boy Scouts.

Lena Horne and Lennie Hayton Secretly Married in Paris

Paris dispatch reports Negro singer Lena Horne and MGM director Lennie Hayton, a white man, wed in 1947 Paris for professional reasons. Manager Ralph Harris said the couple now plan to make the union public. Hayton won an Academy Award for On the Town. Horne performs in Paris before a tour of England and Belgium begins July 3.
