An effective sprinkler system at the Vernon Inc plant in southeast Mt. Vernon averted a serious blaze when fire broke out in two spray booths causing roof ignition. Water restrained the fire until Mt. Vernon and company fire crews gained control. Plant superintendent Ed Campbell called the early damage light. Repairs completed and booths back in operation by night. Fire believed to start from static electricity. risk posed by nearby naphtha and thinner. An earlier alarm in the 2100 block of Cherry traced to an American Laundry wiring fire with damage confined to wiring.
