Illinois Senate Considers $300 Elderly Property Tax Credit
The administration bill would grant seniors 65 and older up to $300 in state credits on real estate taxes if taxes exceed 7 percent of income. The Senate Revenue Committee approved the measure 13 to 0 after House passage. Renters qualify via a formula using 25 percent of rent as equivalent to homeowners tax. Gov Ogilvie calls it a circuit breaker protecting elders from tax overloads, in addition to the $1,500 homestead exemption.
